Safiya Alsayegh Pioneers UAE's Olympic Dreams As First Female Cyclist For Paris 2024
This summer, Safiya Alsayegh is poised to make history as the first female Emirati cyclist to participate in the Olympics. The UAE Team ADQ rider expressed her excitement about the opportunity to compete with athletes from around the world at the event starting on July 26 in Paris. Alsayegh shared her thoughts during a panel discussion in Dubai, organized by On Location, the official hospitality provider of the Olympics and Paralympics 2024. She was joined by Jessica Smith, a former Australia swimming team member at the 2004 Paralympics, and Dan Norton, who represented Great Britain in Rugby 7s at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics.
In the upcoming Paris Olympics, Alsayegh will undertake the longest race of her career, spanning 158 km, aiming to fulfill an Olympic dream that once seemed beyond reach for the UAE. "Eight years ago, it didn't look that optimistic to be in the Olympics right now," Alsayegh reflected. Despite the challenges of balancing studies and sport, she recently graduated with honors in graphic design from the University of Dubai. For her, merely completing the challenging race in Paris would constitute a victory.

During the panel, Smith highlighted the importance of community and national support for athletes, emphasizing the unique pressures faced by those competing on an international stage, including the Olympics and Paralympics. She also touched on the impact of such events in showcasing how nations address disability, creating pathways for young children with disabilities to see themselves in sports.
Norton reminisced about his first Olympic experience in 2016, where he had the opportunity to meet sporting legends. This interaction underscores the unique environment of the Olympic Games, where athletes across various disciplines and countries come together, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and global unity.
The inclusion of Alsayegh in the Olympics represents a significant milestone for the UAE in sports, showcasing the country's evolving sporting landscape and its commitment to promoting female athletes on the world stage. As the countdown to Paris 2024 continues, Alsayegh's participation is not just about personal achievement but also about inspiring future generations in the UAE and beyond.
