Norway Chess Launches Total Chess World Championship Tour Approved By FIDE

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has given the green light to a groundbreaking World Championship format in chess, spearheaded by Norway Chess. This competition, known as the Total Chess World Championship Tour, will identify an overall champion in three distinct chess disciplines: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz. The champion will receive the prestigious title of FIDE World Combined Champion, marking a significant evolution in the chess world.

Organised to take place across various global cities, the tour will feature four tournaments annually, introducing a fresh dynamic to the chess competition scene. The initiative aims to embrace a modern approach to chess, showcasing versatility and strategic depth across different game formats.

Norway Chess Launches Innovative Championship Tour

With an impressive minimum annual prize pool of $2.7 million distributed across the tour, including substantial rewards for the top performers, the Total Chess World Championship Tour sets a new standard for international chess competitions.

Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess, expressed enthusiasm about the championship's potential to redefine chess tournaments. "We want to create an entertaining tournament using cutting-edge technology, innovative and engaging TV and streaming broadcasts, and faster formats to open up the sport of chess to a broader audience than ever before. We expect this to become one of the most prestigious events in the entire chess Calendar. We are very honored by the strong trust FIDE has shown in the project.

"From the very beginning, the federation has been an active and engaged partner — ensuring the project aligns with FIDE's vision and standards. We want to thank them, and especially the FIDE President, for their close involvement and support," explained Madland.

Revolutionising Chess Competitions

The tour's innovative format includes the Fast Classic discipline, a new twist on classical chess that limits each player's time to 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. This variation aims to challenge competitors to demonstrate their skills under pressure, ensuring that each game is both exciting and tactically complex.

"We are looking for 'The Total Chess Player' – a versatile, tactically intelligent, and technically skilled athlete who seamlessly adapts to multiple time controls," Madland stated, highlighting the championship's objective to find the most adept and versatile chess player.

A pilot tournament is scheduled for fall 2026 to introduce the new tour format, followed by the inaugural full championship season in 2027. This preliminary event will serve as a crucial test for the innovative structure of the Total Chess World Championship Tour, paving the way for an annual event that promises to captivate chess enthusiasts worldwide.

Growth in Chess

Arkady Dvorkovich, FIDE president, has expressed strong support for this pioneering initiative, recognizing its potential to attract both seasoned chess fans and new audiences. "We are always looking for ways to innovate and push the boundaries of what chess can be. Although chess is already one of the most popular games in the world, its growth potential is still enormous. With the Total Chess World Championship Tour, we give players a new title to compete for, and the audience a faster tournament format, and we hope the tournament can captivate both the existing chess fans and new audiences," Dvorkovich remarked.

In addition to the excitement this new tournament format brings, it aims to complement the traditional World Chess Championship, enriching the chess calendar with more opportunities for players and fans alike to engage with the sport. Dvorkovich sees the Total Chess World Championship as a long-term collaboration between FIDE and Norway Chess, providing a fresh dimension to the international chess scene.

Norway Chess is actively seeking potential host cities, investors, and partners to participate in and support the Total Chess World Championship. This initiative not only represents a significant innovation in the chess world but also offers an opportunity for cities and sponsors to be part of a global sporting event that aims to captivate a wide audience.
