Tadej Pogacar Opts Out Of Olympics Citing Girlfriend's Exclusion As Factor

Tadej Pogacar has acknowledged that his girlfriend Urska Zigart's exclusion from the Olympics influenced his decision to withdraw from Paris 2024. The three-time Tour de France champion was initially set to compete in the men's road race on August 3. However, it was announced on Monday that he would not participate.

Slovenia's Olympic cycling coach Uros Murn attributed Pogacar's absence to extreme fatigue following his recent Tour de France victory. Despite this, the UAE Team Emirates star competed in a criterium race in Surhuisterveen the next day. When asked about his decision by Dutch broadcaster NOS, Pogacar expressed frustration over Zigart's omission from the Slovenian squad.

Pogacar Skips Olympics Over Snub

Pogacar stated, "It's not the main reason, but it certainly didn't help. I think she deserves her place. She's a two-time national champion in the road race and time trial." Urska Pintar and Eugenia Bujak were chosen over Zigart for the women's road race, despite Zigart winning the national title ahead of Pintar last month.

Team Slovenia confirmed Pogacar's replacement with national team colleague Domen Novak via their Twitter account. They wished Novak success and congratulated Pogacar on his Tour de France win.

Pogacar’s withdrawal from the Olympics highlights how personal factors can impact professional decisions in sports. His acknowledgment of Zigart’s exclusion underscores the emotional elements athletes face beyond physical demands.

The decision also brings attention to selection processes within national teams and how they affect athletes' morale and participation in major events like the Olympics.

While fatigue was cited as a primary reason for Pogacar’s withdrawal, his comments suggest that team dynamics and personal relationships also play significant roles in such decisions.

This development adds another layer to Pogacar’s illustrious career, showing that even top athletes must balance personal and professional aspects when making critical choices.
