Qatari Athletes Eye Glory, Top Results At Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

Qatari athletes are gearing up for the 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris, set from July 26 to August 11, 2024. They aim to build on past successes and bring more glory to Qatari sports.

Fourteen athletes will represent Qatar across five sports, striving for top performances and honourable results at this global event. Athletics is the most significant category for Qatar, featuring eight athletes.

Who are the ones Leading the Charge?

Mutaz Barshim, a world champion high jumper, leads the athletics team. He has previously won silver medals at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics and a gold medal at Tokyo 2020. Barshim aims to defend his title in what might be his final Olympic appearance.

Joining him is hurdler Abderrahman Samba, who secured a bronze medal in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. Bassem Hemeida also joins after winning gold at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok. Ismail Dawood qualified during an international competition in South Africa.

Other Athletic Contenders

The athletics team also includes Abu Bakr Haider in the 800 meters, who earned his spot by winning first place in the Spanish Championship. Ammar Ismail will compete in the 400 meters, Saif Mohammed in pole vault, and Shahad Mohamed in the women's 400 meters.

In shooting, Saeed Abusharib qualified by winning silver in men's individual trap at the Asian Shooting Championships in Korea. Rashid Saleh Al Athba earned his place by winning bronze at the World Skeet Championships in Croatia and gold at the Asian Shooting Championships.

Shooting and Weightlifting

Weightlifter Fares Ibrahim Hassouna returns after winning gold in Tokyo 2020's 96 kg category. He aims for another podium finish after securing silver in the 102 kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Saudi Arabia.

The Qatari beach volleyball team of Sherif Younis and Ahmed Tijan will make their third consecutive Olympic appearance. They qualified through world rankings announced by the International Volleyball Federation and seek another milestone following their bronze medal win in Tokyo 2020.

Swimmer Abdulaziz Al-Obaidly will compete in the 200-meter breaststroke, aiming to establish himself among elite athletes at this prestigious event.

Qatar achieved a historic milestone at Tokyo 2020 by winning three medals: two golds by Mutaz Barshim (high jump) and Fares Ibrahim (96 kg weightlifting), and a bronze by beach volleyball duo Ahmed Tijan and Sherif Younis. This achievement ranked them first among Arab nations.
