These winners will have the opportunity to compete against some of the most eminent Grandmasters on the planet, in what is the first franchise-based chess league of its kind.

Starting from August 28, 2025, the GCL Contenders initiative is a near-month-long event leading directly into the third season of the Global Chess League, which is set to commence on December 13.

This tournament is not just for the seasoned professionals but is also aimed at shining a spotlight on emerging talent from the grassroots level of chess, enhancing the sense of community within the game, and providing a platform for new icons of chess to arise and compete on a global stage alongside established legends.

Peeyush Dubey, the Chairperson of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, emphasized the transformative vision of the GCL, stating, "Since its inception, GCL has been at the forefront of redefining the game. With GCL Contenders, we are taking this vision further by opening the stage to aspiring players worldwide, allowing them to potentially compete alongside the world's greatest Grandmasters. This is more than a tournament, it is a landmark step for the global chess community, one that will inspire players and fans across generations and geographies."

The GCL Contenders 2025 initiative is designed to be inclusive, connecting players from six different time zones, ranging from India to the USA, UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

This global reach not only fuels the growth of the Global Chess League but also fosters a sense of unity within the chess community, bringing together enthusiasts, amateurs, and professionals in a celebration of the game's universal appeal.

Arkady Dvorkovich, the President of FIDE, lauded the GCL for its innovative approach to the game, stating, "The Global Chess League is an innovative concept that brought new ideas to chess and engaged new audiences. We are excited to see this continue with the new Contenders programme, which will bring together professional and non-professional players in competition to become the ambassadors of the third season of the GCL."

The competition will feature teams from across the globe, including Alpine SG Pipers, American Gambits, Ganges Grandmasters, PBG Alaskan Knights, Triveni Continental Kings, and upGrad Mumba Masters.

This lineup showcases the diversity and global representation within the league, setting the stage for a truly international contest.

Danny Rensch, Chief Chess Officer at Chess.com, highlighted the appeal of team-based chess, expressing enthusiasm for the expanded competitive ecosystem that GCL Contenders brings.

He pointed out, "The first two seasons of the GCL demonstrated the mass appeal of team-based chess, something we have always believed in. Now with the launch of GCL Contenders, we're excited about a deeper and more expansive competitive ecosystem. And there is no better country than India for Season 3 of the GCL, a place that lives and breathes chess."

For those interested in being a part of this groundbreaking opportunity, registration is open on the Global Chess League website for Contenders 2025.

This represents not just a chance to compete but to be part of a historic moment in chess, bridging the gap between amateur enthusiasts and the upper echelons of the game's elite.

The GCL Contenders 2025 is setting the stage for a transformative period in chess, offering a platform for new talents to emerge and compete at the highest levels.

With the support of the global chess community, this initiative is poised to elevate the game to new heights, making it more inclusive, competitive, and exciting for players and fans around the world.
