Dakar 2026: A New Chapter Begins With First Olympic Event In Africa
As the Olympic Games Paris 2024 conclude, focus shifts to the upcoming Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Dakar 2026. This event will be held from 31 October 2026 for two weeks in Senegal, marking the first Olympic event on African soil. The Games will take place in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly, aiming to inspire hope and opportunities among African youth.
Dakar 2026 will introduce a new approach to the YOG sports programme, tailored to fit local contexts. This edition will feature 25 sports in the competition programme and an additional 10 in an "engagement programme." This initiative aims to encourage local youth participation by allowing them to try these sports rather than just watch.
The festival has engaged thousands through sports activities, music concerts, and cultural events. It promotes physical activity and raises awareness of the YOG and Olympic values. The next festival is scheduled from 7 to 10 November 2024 in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.
The Dakar 2026 Organising Committee has launched several initiatives to engage young people. One such programme is the Brevet Olympique, Civique et Sportif (Olympic, Civic and Sports Certificate), which began in 2023. It aims to reach up to 900,000 children across 11,000 schools by 2026.
Additionally, the Kids' Olympic Skills initiative promotes education through sport for children aged 6 to 18. These programmes are designed to create a lasting legacy for Senegalese youth and the broader African continent.
The Spirit of "Teranga"
Dakar 2026 is deeply connected to Senegal's rich sporting culture and its youth. The Games will showcase Senegalese hospitality known as Teranga. This term from the Wolof dialect embodies warmth, generosity, and sharing—values central to Senegalese life.
The motto "Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates" reflects this spirit. It signifies how African youth are ready to welcome their peers worldwide during the Games.
For two years leading up to Dakar 2026, the Dakar en Jeux festival has celebrated sport within host communities. It offers a preview of what to expect during the YOG.
In summary, Dakar 2026 aims not only to host a successful sporting event but also to inspire a generation of young Africans through sport and cultural exchange.
