Bollywood's Rs 250 Crore Loss Due To Maidaan Vs BMCM Box Office Clash
After a year of cinematic triumphs, Bollywood faces a significant setback with the box office clash between "Maidaan" and "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan" (BMCM) on Eid 2024. Despite high expectations, both films experienced disappointing openings on April 11, 2024, leading to a substantial financial loss for the industry.
The competition between superstars Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar was highly anticipated by fans and industry insiders alike. However, both "Maidaan," a biographical sports drama directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, and "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan," a high-octane action entertainer directed by Ali Abbas Zadar and starring Akshay Kumar alongside Tiger Shroff, struggled to attract audiences from the start.

"Maidaan," which tells the story of football legend Syed Abdul Rahim, and BMCM failed to live up to their blockbuster potential, marking a concerning period for Bollywood's box office performance.
A trade critic, speaking to The Indian Express under the condition of anonymity, disclosed that the industry faced a staggering loss of Rs 250 crores on a single Friday due to the clash between these two films. This event has been described as one of the worst weeks in Bollywood's history in terms of financial performance.
The critic further explained that "Maidaan" was produced on a budget of Rs 250 crores, while "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan" had an even larger budget of Rs 350 crores. Despite hopes for a rebate from the UK government to mitigate losses for BMCM, the film's larger share of financial loss remains a significant concern. As per Sacnilk, BMCM's total collection currently stands at Rs 57.65 crores, whereas "Maidaan" has garnered around Rs 45 crores.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta pointed out that the exorbitant fees charged by leading actors have also contributed to the current downturn in Bollywood's fortunes. He highlighted that Akshay Kumar's fee exceeds Rs 100 crores, questioning the justification behind such high charges given the film's performance. Similarly, Tiger Shroff's fee for BMCM was around Rs 35-40 crores. The opening day collections for "Maidaan" were notably low at Rs 4.5 crores.
In contrast to this year's disappointing second quarter, Shah Rukh Khan's "Pathaan" made history last year by earning over Rs 550 crores nett in the Hindi belt alone during the first quarter, contributing significantly to the industry's earnings.
The total box office collection for the first three months of 2024 amounted to approximately Rs 700 crores, derived from over a dozen Hindi films. However, the outlook for the second quarter appears bleak in comparison, underscoring the challenges facing Bollywood in maintaining its box office momentum.
