Award-Winning Marathi Film Sthal Soon To Premiere On ZEE5 Global
ZEE5 Global has announced the World Digital Premiere of the celebrated Marathi movie, Sthal. Set to release on October 10, this film has not only captivated audiences across a variety of international film festivals but also enjoyed a successful run in theaters.
Sthal captivates with the tale of Savita, a 16-year-old girl from rural Maharashtra. Her journey, intricately woven around the societal norms of arranged marriage and patriarchal expectations, shines a light on the struggles young girls face in conforming to these traditions.

The narrative eloquently unravels Savita's awakening to the suppression of her dreams, identity, and worth, offering a compelling critique of the social practices that bind her.
The film's setting, Dongargaon village in Maharashtra's Chandrapur District, adds a layer of authenticity, with the cast predominantly comprising debutant actors and local talents. Among them, Nandini Chikte stars as Savita, with Suyog Dhawas, Taranath Khiratkar, and Sangita Sonekar playing key roles in her family. Sthal has been praised for its engaging storytelling, powerful performances, and its courageous stance against societal norms, setting the stage for its global digital debut on ZEE5 Global.
Directed by Jayant Digambar Somalkar and produced under the banner of Dhun, Sthal has been lauded at numerous international film festivals. Its accolades include the NETPAC Award for Best Asia Pacific Film at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023, Best Marathi Film and Best Actress at the Pune International Film Festival 2024, and the Audience Film Award at the London Indian Film Festival 2024.
Additionally, it seized the Audience Choice Award and Best Debut Director at the Indo-German Film Week 2024, Best Feature Film at the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart 2024, and Best Debut Film at the Jaffna International Cinema Festival 2024, among several others.
Sthal delves into the harsh realities faced by women in traditional settings, underscored by gender inequality, systemic bias, and objectification. Its narrative, viewed through the eyes of its protagonist Savita, presents a raw and honest examination of the limited autonomy young girls possess over their lives in similar cultural contexts.
Somalkar said, "Sthal is an intensely personal film, rooted in the village where I grew up and inspired by stories I've witnessed up close. The quiet suffering and indignities that women face in the name of tradition are painful realities that often go unnoticed.
Through Sthal, I wanted to bring those silenced voices to the forefront. While the film's journey across international festivals has been humbling, its premiere on ZEE5 Global holds special meaning — it allows Sthal to reach millions, far beyond the festival circuit, and connect with everyday audiences who may see their own realities reflected on screen."
Echoing this sentiment, Nandini Chikte shared her experiences playing the lead role, "Portraying Savita has been an emotional and transformative journey for me. As a newcomer, the love and appreciation I've received for this role has been overwhelming and deeply humbling.
Savita represents so many young girls whose voices go unheard and whose dreams are quietly buried under societal expectations. I hope every single person watches this film — not just to witness her story, but to reflect on the many real Savitas around us. Her fight for dignity and choice is one that belongs to all of us."
Hema V.R., chief channel officer - Zee Marathi and business head of ZEE5 Marathi, highlighted the streaming platform's enthusiasm for the film, stating, "We are proud to add Sthal to ZEE5 Global's ever-growing library of impactful, thought-provoking cinema. This film is not only a festival favourite but also a powerful reflection of real societal issues that remain deeply relevant today.
At ZEE5 Global, we are committed to curating content that resonates with our diverse audience while championing authentic voices and socially conscious storytelling. Sthal exemplifies this vision, and we are thrilled to bring it to a global audience through its World Digital Premiere."
