Max Verstappen Wins Saudi Arabian Grand Prix 2024
At the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah, Max Verstappen secured a resounding victory from pole position, propelling Red Bull to a commanding start in this season's Formula One championship. This win marked Red Bull's second consecutive one-two finish, with Sergio Perez clinching second place under the Jeddah Corniche floodlights. Perez, who was the victor at this venue last year, crossed the finish line 13.643 seconds behind Verstappen, who now enjoys a 15-point advantage in the overall standings.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari clinched third place, also clocking the fastest lap and securing his first podium of the season. However, it was Oliver Bearman, a rookie standing in for his team, who captured the audience's attention by finishing seventh and being voted Driver of the Day.
Historic Wins And Debutant Triumphs
Verstappen's victory in Jeddah marks a series of firsts and historical achievements. Notably, this is the first time Verstappen has won the first two races of a season. Additionally, this win extends his winning streak to nine consecutive races, dating back to Japan last September, and brings his career win tally to 56. This victory also represented his 100th career podium, moving Red Bull ahead of Williams to fourth place on the all-time win list with their 115th victory.
Oliver Bearman, at the young age of 18 years and 305 days, made an impressive Formula One race debut, starting in 11th place. As Ferrari's youngest rookie and a stand-in for Carlos Sainz, who was sidelined due to appendicitis, Bearman's performance was not just commendable but also historic. He became the youngest British Formula One driver and the 66th since 1950 to score points on his debut.
Race Day Dynamics
The race saw its fair share of drama and strategic plays. The deployment of the safety car on lap seven, following a crash by Aston Martin's Lance Stroll, led to a flurry of pit stops. Despite this, Verstappen quickly reclaimed the lead by lap 13 after racing resumed. Meanwhile, Perez was penalized with a five-second penalty for an unsafe release during a pitstop, adding another layer of challenge for the Red Bull team.
Haas's Kevin Magnussen faced penalties for causing a collision and for leaving the track, impacting his race outcome. Yet, his strategic driving enabled teammate Nico Hulkenberg to secure the final point for the team.
Alpine's Pierre Gasly was the season's first retirement due to a suspected gearbox issue, highlighting the unpredictable nature of Formula One racing.
With Red Bull now leading the constructor standings with 87 points, followed by Ferrari with 49 and McLaren with 28, the stage is set for the next showdown at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 24. The early-season dynamics hint at an intense competition, with teams and drivers alike aiming for supremacy in the high-stakes world of Formula One racing.
