All-Electric Formula E Celebrates A Decade Of Net Zero Carbon With Season 9 Sustainability Report
On the occasion of Earth Day, Formula E unveiled its Season 9 Sustainability Report, reinforcing its claim to being the world's most sustainable sport. This year, the all-electric racing championship celebrates a decade of maintaining a net zero carbon footprint, a significant milestone that underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship.
The report highlights the championship's continuous efforts to lessen its environmental impact. Notably, it achieved a 41% reduction in emissions per race compared to Season 5, alongside a significant increase in the engagement of the FIA Girls on Track programme, which saw a 140% jump in participation. This initiative aims to boost gender diversity in motorsport by providing educational opportunities for girls at schools and universities.

Further efforts to curtail emissions include a 41% reduction in freight emissions, attributed to a more robust race calendar, optimised freight routes, and the use of biofuels. These achievements were made possible through a partnership with DHL, Formula E's Official Founding and Logistics Partner. The championship's sustainability efforts have not gone unnoticed, as it topped three leading sustainability ranking tables: the Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sports (GSBS), the Sustainable Motorsport Index (SMI), and the Sustainable Championships Index (SChI).
The series also marked a first in sports by aligning with the international standard for carbon neutrality (PAS 2060) in June 2023, ensuring the highest levels of accountability and credibility in its operations. In addition to its environmental initiatives, Formula E has made significant social contributions, particularly through its partnership with UNICEF, which has positively affected 2.5 million children and young people worldwide.
Julia Pallé, Vice President, Sustainability, Formula E, commented on the championship's sustainability journey, stating, "While still only 10 years old, Formula E continues to lead the way in sustainability in sport and showcase that sustainability, performance and entertainment can all powerfully co-exist. As we continue to grow, we also continue to implement the most advanced and comprehensive measures that benefit both people and the planet, leaving a positive legacy in the markets where we race."
The Season 9 report also enumerates ten significant achievements of Formula E over the past decade, including maintaining its rank as the number one ESG Global Sport and Motorsport, being the first sport to achieve Net Zero Carbon since inception, and impacting over 2.5 million children positively through its partnership with UNICEF.
In terms of environmental progress, the report outlines a 41% decrease in carbon emissions per race and a similar reduction in freight carbon emissions compared to Season 5. This has been achieved through strategic planning and the adoption of biofuels. Socially, the championship has seen remarkable progress through the FIA Girls on Track programme, the engagement of thousands of children and adults in educational and community activities, and significant investment in community projects across host cities.
Formula E's commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental measures, aiming to create a lasting positive impact on communities and inspire other organisations to adopt more sustainable practices. With its pioneering efforts in the world of motorsport, Formula E sets a world-leading example of how sports can effectively contribute to the global sustainability agenda.
