FIA Unveils New Task Force To Address Rising Costs And Accessibility Issues In Motorsport Insurance

The escalating costs and dwindling access to insurance in the motor sport sector are posing a threat to its sustainability and growth on a worldwide scale. These concerns have prompted the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) to take decisive action.

Under the leadership of Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA's president, a new task force has been established to tackle these issues head-on, aiming to provide clarity and practical solutions to the rising insurance premiums, limited coverage options, and the overall impact these challenges have on the realm of motor sport.

The FIA Motorsport Insurance Task Force is set to leverage the substantial experience and knowledge the FIA has garnered through its work in the mobility sector. Its primary goal is to deliver clear guidance and practical solutions that can aid Member Clubs in navigating the increasingly complex insurance landscape. This initiative underscores the FIA's commitment to ensuring the safety, sustainability, affordability, and global growth of motor sport.

"The FIA is committed to ensuring motor sport and mobility are safe, sustainable, affordable, and accessible, while driving global growth. Rising insurance costs risk limiting opportunities and undermining accessibility across the world," Ben Sulayem stated.

He emphasised the necessity of collaborative efforts with Clubs, insurers, and local authorities to devise solutions that maintain the sport's integrity, fairness, and sustainability for everyone involved. The task force's approach reflects a comprehensive strategy to address the financial and operational challenges threatening the future of motor sport.

Valerio Iachizzi, secretary general for sport, and Willem Groenewald, secretary general for mobility and sustainability, are leading the charge, highlighting the importance of opportunity and accessibility within the motor sport ecosystem.

"Motor sport thrives on opportunity and accessibility. Rising insurance costs present a serious challenge to maintaining this ecosystem, particularly for grassroots competitors and organisers," Iachizzi remarked.

Groenewald added, "In mobility, affordability and safety are central to delivering sustainable transport solutions, and these principles are directly relevant to the challenges motor sport is now facing."

The task force's mandate includes examining the scale, scope, and impact of the insurance challenges facing motor sport, identifying core issues and root causes, developing metrics and benchmarks for assessing financial and operational implications, and evaluating potential risks to the sport's future if these challenges are not addressed.

With the assessment phase already in progress, the FIA plans to deliver an interim report at the FIA Annual General Assemblies scheduled to take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in December.

This initiative not only highlights the FIA's role in bridging mobility and motor sport but also showcases its dedication to supporting Member Clubs through educational resources, global understanding, and cross-governmental engagement.

By tackling the insurance challenges head-on, the FIA Motorsport Insurance Task Force aims to secure a sustainable and accessible future for motor sport enthusiasts and professionals around the globe.
