Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League Gears Up For Global Expansion With $2.25M Prize

The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), a premier event in autonomous mobility, is set for its next iteration on November 15, 2025, at the Yas Marina Circuit. With a prize pool of $2.25 million, this event, organized by ASPIRE under the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) of Abu Dhabi, marks a significant leap in the field of autonomous racing.

In its second season, following an impressive debut in April 2024 that captivated over 10,000 live spectators and garnered more than a million views online, A2RL has broadened its scope. It now welcomes top-tier research teams from an expanded roster of 10 countries, including newcomers France and Japan.

Autonomous Racing League Expands Globally with 2 25M Prize

These international teams will compete alongside seasoned participants from the USA, Germany, China, Singapore, Italy, and the UAE. This expansion not only underscores the league's growing prestige but also its role in pushing the envelope of autonomous system competitions by bridging theoretical simulations with tangible, real-world applications.

During the recent Make it in the Emirates Forum in Abu Dhabi, the upgraded autonomous racecar for the A2RL, known as the Emirates Autonomous Vehicle (EAV-24), was showcased. Built upon the Super Formula SF23 platform, the EAV-24 represents a considerable advancement in autonomous racing technology. It features enhanced sensor arrays, superior compute systems, and refined control logic, all optimized to meet the rigorous demands of autonomous racing. The production and automation of this vehicle in the UAE spotlight the nation's burgeoning expertise in AI, robotics, and high-performance mobility.

A key highlight of this season is the introduction of the A2RL SIM-Sprint, a virtual racing series designed to expedite the refinement of driving algorithms and the testing of AI systems under a variety of conditions. This innovation extends the league's activities throughout the year, providing a consistent platform for teams to hone their autonomous driving technologies. The SIM-Sprint is particularly valuable for addressing 'edge cases'—rare or extreme scenarios that are challenging to replicate on physical tracks but crucial for developing robust AI solutions.

The SIM-Sprint initiative is part of a broader strategy to open up the league to a wider audience, including independent developers, fans, and aspiring teams globally. With a structured progression system from Sim Academy to Sim Pro, and finally to real-world A2RL qualifications, the league is paving new pathways for talent to enter the sphere of high-performance autonomy.

"The A2RL is more than a test bed for autonomous technology; it's a catalyst for its rapid evolution under extremely challenging conditions. It's not only a display of engineering prowess but a forward-looking platform for the future of mobility," stated Faisal Al Bannai, Advisor to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs and Secretary General of ATRC. He emphasized the importance of investing in deep tech innovation and the global challenge to advance, build, and compete ethically and intelligently.

Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, highlighted, "This year's league expansion reflects Abu Dhabi's dedication to innovation-driven challenges, focusing on real-world impact, engineered rapidly and at scale," he said.

At the competition's core lies the Dallara Super Formula SF23, a next-generation open-wheel race car that has been adapted exclusively for A2RL. As the world's second-fastest open-wheel race car after Formula One, the SF23 reaches speeds up to 300 km/h and is built from sustainable bio-composite materials. It features advanced braking systems, drive-by-wire throttle control, and a custom-built autonomous stack, providing teams an unparalleled platform for AI optimization.

Through the efforts of ASPIRE and ATRC, A2RL is positioning Abu Dhabi as a global frontrunner in high-performance autonomy, revolutionizing the development, testing, and deployment of intelligent systems.
