UAE Ministry Unveils Classification Criteria For Premier Universities
The UAE's Ministry of Education has established a classification system for the country's top universities, focusing on scientific research, innovation, and teaching quality. The National Higher Education Institutions Classification Framework assigns 35% weightage to both scientific research and teaching quality. The framework aims to raise educational standards, promote best academic practices, and improve the overall student experience.
Framework details and categories
Dr Sameera Almulla, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Curriculum Sector and Director of Certificate Equivalency Department at the Ministry of Education, explained that the classification is not a ranking system. It is designed for research universities initially, with non-research universities to be classified in the coming weeks. The framework comprises four pillars: scientific research and innovation (35%), teaching quality (35%), employment and job market alignment (20%), and international collaborations (10%). Institutions are divided into two main categories: research institutions and non-research institutions of higher education, with four levels within each category.
The classification system was introduced following the Cabinet's approval of a national framework for classifying higher education institutions in the UAE, including both public and private establishments.
