Oman Unveils Ambitious Plan To Hire 4,000 Teachers By 2026

Over the first four years of the 10th Five-Year Plan, 15,000 Omani teachers were recruited, significantly higher than the 6,800 hires during the ninth plan. An additional 4,000 teachers, predominantly Omanis, are slated for recruitment in 2025/2026, elevating the total number of teachers appointed under the current plan to over 19,000. This initiative reflects a concerted focus on developing human resources within the education sector.

This week, Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed al Shaibani, Oman's Minister of Education, deliberated on the advancements and strategies in school education, including policies, quality assurance, human resources development, training, and the administration of private schooling across the Sultanate.

This visit underscored the education sector's robust expansion, bolstered by governmental backing and the Royal Directives from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. Highlighting significant growth metrics, the discussions shed light on the increasing number of students and educational institutions, alongside the recruitment of Omani teachers and the burgeoning private education scene.

A notable surge in student enrolment within government schools was emphasized, showcasing a jump from 678,000 pupils in the 2020/2021 academic cycle to a projected 817,000 by the 2024/2025 academic year, equating to a growth rate of 20.5%.

This upward trajectory is mirrored in the anticipated rise of school numbers, with a forecast of 1,306 institutions by the 2025/2026 academic year, up from 1,182 in 2020/2021, marking a 10.4% increase. These statistics not only underscore the sector's growth but also the ongoing commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure.

Parallel to the growth in public education, the private and international school sectors have experienced substantial expansion. The number of private and international schools, including kindergartens, soared to 1,223 in the 2024/2025 academic year from just 880 in 2019/2020, marking a 39% increase.

This rise is accompanied by a boost in student enrolment in private schools, which grew from 189,000 in 2019/2020 to 233,000 in 2024/2025, inclusive of 96,000 pre-schoolers. This trend underscores the diversifying educational landscape in the sultanate, catering to a broader range of educational needs and preferences.

With a focus on infrastructure expansion, increased teacher recruitment, and the growth of private education, the Sultanate is steadily advancing towards its educational objectives. These measures collectively contribute to a more inclusive and comprehensive educational system, ensuring a brighter future for the nation's youth.
