Dubai Private Schools Stand Out Globally For Financial Literacy And Creative Skills

Dubai's private schools have achieved impressive rankings in international assessments, with a second-place finish in financial literacy and sixth place in creative thinking. The rankings were determined by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022, conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). PISA evaluates 15-year-old students' abilities to apply real-life skills in reading, mathematics, and science to practical situations every three years. In 2022, Dubai participated in the additional financial literacy and creative thinking domains for the first time.

Financial literacy assesses students' understanding of financial concepts and risks, as well as their skills, motivation, and confidence to make good decisions in various financial situations. Creative thinking measures students' ability to generate, evaluate, and refine ideas that can lead to original and effective solutions, advances in knowledge, and impactful expressions of creativity. Dubai private schools ranked second out of 20 participating countries and regions for financial literacy, scoring 522 points compared to the OECD global average of 498 points. Eighty-two per cent of the 4,478 participating students from Dubai reported knowing how to manage their money, while 79 percent had savings goals for things they wanted to buy or do.

Dubai's performance in creative thinking

In creative thinking, Dubai private schools ranked sixth out of 64 participating countries and regions, scoring 36 points compared to the OECD average of 33 points. Eighty-four per cent of the 7,474 participating students from Dubai private schools performed at or above the OECD baseline level in creative thinking skills. Additionally, 74 per cent of students expressed confidence in coming up with creative ideas for school projects.

Aisha Miran, Director-General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, praised the students' performance in these international assessments. She also expressed gratitude to school leaders who motivate teachers and students to improve their performance; teachers who encourage students to develop their abilities; parents who support their children's goals; and students whose hard work led to these remarkable results.

Fatma Belrehif, CEO of the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau, highlighted that schools excelling in creative thinking also achieve high scores in mathematics, reading, and science. She emphasised the importance of developing students' capabilities across all fields to prepare them for the future.

According to PISA 2022 results announced in December 2023, Dubai private schools ranked ninth globally in mathematics with a mean score of 497 points – exceeding the OECD average by 25 points – as well as ranking 13th globally in reading with a mean score of 498 points and 14th globally in science with a mean score of 503 points.
