AUS Engages Community In Breast Cancer Awareness Through Pink October Events
American University of Sharjah (AUS) is actively participating in Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October. The university aligns with UAE's national initiatives to boost awareness and promote screenings. Throughout the month, AUS will host various events, supporting major campaigns like the Pink Caravan and the National Cancer Control Plan.
On 16th October, Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS, attended the Pink Fest event organised by the School of Business Administration (SBA). Sheikha Bodour stated, "Supporting Pink October is a vital contribution to raising awareness about breast cancer and the life-saving importance of early detection. Through education, research, and community-driven initiatives like Pink Fest, we foster a culture of compassion and resilience. It’s very moving to see the commitment of our students and partners to making this event a reality, and ensuring we continue to make meaningful strides in the fight against this disease."
The event was held in collaboration with Al-Jalila Foundation and featured a fashion and jewellery show. Designs were showcased by SBA students Aziza El Asri, Mahra Al-Ali, Yassin Sadek, Mohamed Alblooshi, AyAyat Alhaji, and GVO. Jewellery was provided by Dusoul by Dhamani. A silent auction followed, with proceeds supporting cancer research at AUS.
Dr. Amer Al Zarooni from Al Jalila Foundation remarked on their #PINKtober campaign: "Our annual #PINKtober campaign, now in its tenth edition, is a shining example of how community partnerships can raise awareness on important health causes and generate sustainable charitable revenues. Together, with their continued support we are improving the lives of breast cancer patients and their families. We are grateful for American University of Sharjah’s efforts and philanthropic spirit and look forward to making an even greater impact in the communities we serve."
Thumbay Group also contributed by offering free screenings during Pink Fest to promote breast cancer prevention.
Educational Initiatives at AUS
Earlier this week, the College of Engineering (CEN) hosted a Pink Month Awareness event featuring faculty research on breast cancer. Dr. Ghaleb Husseini presented on "Rendering Chemotherapy More Humane," while Dr. Salam Dhou discussed "AI in Action: Revolutionizing Early Detection of Breast Cancer." A panel discussion included participants from AUS University Health Services and CEN student clubs.
AUS University Health Services annually marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month with campus-wide campaigns promoting prevention through screenings and self-examinations. This year they offer free consultations for students and staff at the health centre.
Accessible Screening Options
In partnership with International Radiology Center and DML Medsol Laboratory, AUS provides discounted mammogram services for early detection. Dr. Lubna Al Saraj emphasised the importance of these efforts: "Breast cancer prevention and awareness are essential for early detection and effective treatment," said Dr. Lubna Al Saraj, Director of AUS University Health Services. "By encouraging regular screenings, self-examinations and prompt interventions, we strive to minimise the impact of breast cancer in our community. Our focus is empowering individuals with the knowledge and resources necessary to protect their health through continuous education and medical support."
Dr. Narjess Boubakri expressed gratitude for all involved in Pink Fest: "We are proud to host PinkFest in partnership with Al Jalila Foundation, raising awareness and vital funds for breast cancer research at AUS. This event highlights our commitment at SBA to giving back to the community, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Dean’s Business Team for their hard work and dedication. It is essential to recognise the incredible effort our students put into making this initiative a success. We acknowledge the partnership, sponsorship and great support from Al Jalila Foundation. Thank you all for making this happen."
