AUS And American University Introduce 4+1 Pathway For Graduate Studies In Environmental Science

In a significant development for environmental sciences and sustainability education, the American University of Sharjah (AUS) has established a progressive academic collaboration with American University (AU) in Washington, DC.

This partnership introduces a 4+1 academic pathway, designed for AUS undergraduates specializing in environmental sciences and sustainability, allowing them to pursue a Master of Science in Environmental Science at AU. This initiative enables students to achieve a master's degree within a year following their four-year bachelor's degree completion at AUS.

AUS Launches 4 1 Pathway with American University

This collaboration, which was finalised in April 2025, deepens the longstanding relationship between AUS and AU. The roots of this partnership trace back to the establishment of AUS, illustrating more than twenty years of academic and institutional collaboration. The initiative was propelled by Dr. Fatin Samara, a professor at AUS and an adjunct faculty member at AU.

Dr. Samara emphasized the significance of this partnership's timing with Earth Day, highlighting a collective commitment to fostering environmental stewardship among students. "The launch of this new partnership, during the same week as Earth Day, symbolizes our community's commitment to creating pathways for students to progress toward environmental leadership," she remarked.

Emphasizing the prestige of the collaboration, AU stands out as a leading institution, ranked among the top 100 US universities by U.S. News Best Colleges and holding the second position in The Princeton Review's Green Colleges ranking. This recognition underscores AU's commitment to environmental education and sustainability, aligning with the objectives of the 4+1 academic pathway.

The 4+1 pathway model stipulates that AUS students will first complete their undergraduate degree at AUS before transitioning to AU for a year to complete their master's programme. Eligible students have the opportunity to transfer up to nine credits toward their master's degree, which includes two graduate-level courses and a senior research project undertaken in their final year at AUS. To qualify, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. Additionally, students admitted will benefit from a substantial 50 percent tuition scholarship, making graduate studies in the US more affordable.

Dr. Hana Sulieman, Associate Dean of CAS, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "CAS' leadership is delighted to see this partnership come to life. It reflects our commitment to providing CAS' students with an enriched academic experience that extends beyond borders. We are proud to collaborate with a globally respected institution like American University in Washington, DC, on this 4+1 pathway. This partnership will help accelerate the route to graduate education for our students in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability program and allow them to spend a year studying in a global center for environmental policy and research."

Dr. Vicky Wilkins, Provost of American University, also shared her excitement about expanding the partnership, emphasizing the program's potential to address contemporary sustainability challenges. "We are excited to expand our partnership with the American University of Sharjah through an accelerated pathway to a master's degree in environmental science," she stated. "This program equips students with the knowledge and skills to confront the complex sustainability challenges of today and tomorrow. Together, we are shaping the next generation of leaders who will drive global environmental progress."

Students participating in this program can select between a thesis and a non-thesis track, focusing on environmental science research or environmental policy and advocacy, respectively. Both tracks offer an interdisciplinary approach, blending science with policy, economics, and global sustainability concerns. Upon completion, graduates will find themselves in an advantageous position to engage with Washington, DC's vibrant job market and its role as a global nexus for environmental research, policy, and advocacy.

Graduates from AU's Master of Science in Environmental Science program have successfully ventured into prestigious roles at key organizations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the World Bank, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. AU’s faculty involvement in leading research areas further enhances the institution's appeal for AUS graduates seeking academic or research-oriented careers.

This programme will be available to AUS students starting Fall 2025.
