Students Learn To Combat Climate Change With Amideast And Boeing's STEM Program

In a significant stride towards sustainable development, Amideast/UAE and Boeing have recently celebrated the graduation of 46 students from their STEM Club, a pivotal part of the STEM for Sustainability programme. This initiative, aimed at students in grades seven to nine from various schools in Dubai, focuses on integrating practical sustainability practices into daily life. The programme covers essential topics such as water and electricity conservation, sustainable aviation fuels, and advanced propulsion systems like hydrogen and electric. Moreover, it equips students with digital skills including computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing, enabling them to create eco-friendly designs for vehicles, windmills, and farmhouses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Kuljit Ghata-Aura, president of Boeing Middle East, Türkiye, Africa, and Central Asia, highlighted the programme's alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He emphasized its role in empowering the next generation to contribute to decarbonisation efforts. The graduation ceremony held on March 1 at Dubai Knowledge Park featured a panel titled '360 Collaboration in Sustainability Efforts'. Moderated by Sara El-Dallal, Amideast/UAE Country Director, the panel included notable speakers such as Meghan Gregonis, the US Consul General in Dubai; Ghata-Aura; and Greta Holtz, President and CEO of Amideast, Ambassador (ret). The discussion underscored the critical role of education and partnerships across sectors in mobilizing youth towards sustainable future solutions.

Youth Tackle Climate Change

Greta Holtz remarked on the programme's contribution towards the UAE’s Sustainable Development Goals through focused collaboration on sustainability and STEM education. She praised the initiative as a testament to how partnerships between the private sector and educational organisations can positively impact various stakeholders including students, parents, and teachers. Jay Treloar, spokesperson of the US Mission to the UAE, expressed pride in supporting the STEM for Sustainability programme alongside Amideast and Boeing. He congratulated the graduating students and expressed anticipation for their future contributions to the UAE’s sustainability goals.

Future Directions

The STEM for Sustainability programme represents a concerted effort by Amideast and Boeing to align STEM education with sustainability objectives in the UAE and North Africa. Launched in May 2023 ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP 28), this three-year initiative encompasses a variety of activities. These include STEM roundtables, podcasts, fairs, and clubs all designed to instill eco-friendly behaviors and values among students. This initiative not only educates but also inspires action towards a more sustainable future.

The successful graduation of these 46 students marks a promising step forward in the journey towards sustainability. By fostering an understanding of sustainable practices and technologies among young minds, Amideast/UAE and Boeing are contributing significantly to the global effort against climate change. As these students move forward, they carry with them not just knowledge but also a responsibility towards building a greener planet.
