SPIRE Framework: Abu Dhabi Launches Unique Wellbeing Mark For Schools
The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is taking a significant step towards reshaping the educational landscape with the introduction of the Wellbeing Mark. This pioneering initiative seeks to elevate the importance of mental, physical, and emotional health within the school environment, setting a new standard for what constitutes a supportive and nurturing education system.
Starting in the academic year 2025/26, this groundbreaking program will be implemented across all private and charter schools in Abu Dhabi. The Wellbeing Mark is designed to honor schools that actively foster a culture of wellbeing, demonstrating to parents and the wider community their commitment to more than just academic achievement. This initiative marks a shift in educational priorities, highlighting the indelible link between student wellbeing and academic success.

For the first time, the Wellbeing Mark provides a clear and standardized way to measure a school's commitment to the wellbeing of its students and teachers. This transparency allows parents to make informed decisions about their child's education, looking beyond traditional academic metrics to consider the school's support for the overall development of their child.
The introduction of this mark underscores the belief that a quality education encompasses both academic rigor and the cultivation of a supportive, nurturing environment that promotes the growth of the whole child.
Research consistently supports the premise that environments conducive to wellbeing significantly enhance student performance, resilience, and engagement in learning. Furthermore, prioritizing wellbeing has been shown to increase teacher satisfaction, reduce burnout, and improve classroom dynamics. This initiative by ADEK recognizes these benefits, promoting a holistic approach to education where wellbeing is seen as essential to achieving academic excellence.
Central to the Wellbeing Mark is the SPIRE framework, a comprehensive model that addresses five key dimensions of wellbeing: self-empowerment, physical health, intellectual growth, relational skills, and emotional resilience. This framework ensures a balanced approach to wellbeing, encouraging schools to integrate these principles into every aspect of school life. The structured yet adaptable nature of this framework allows for the unique needs of each school community to be met, thereby fostering environments where students and teachers alike can flourish.
In preparation for the full rollout, ADEK is conducting a pilot phase with 64 schools—comprising 47 private and 17 charter institutions. This preliminary phase is crucial for refining the criteria and processes of the Wellbeing Mark, ensuring its effectiveness and fairness. The pilot allows for the collection of feedback and the adjustment of the initiative to meet the diverse needs of Abu Dhabi's school communities, setting the stage for a successful implementation that truly enhances the educational experience.
In a significant departure from traditional educational metrics, ADEK's Wellbeing Mark shifts the focus from mere compliance with regulations to a genuine commitment to fostering wellbeing. This transition from policy to practice, from buzzwords to measurable benchmarks, represents a transformative approach to education in Abu Dhabi.
By prioritising the wellbeing of students and teachers, ADEK is setting a new standard, one that acknowledges the integral role of a supportive school culture in facilitating meaningful learning and personal development.
