Abu Dhabi And Khalifa University Initiate STEM Program For Charter Schools
The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has joined forces with Khalifa University of Science and Technology to develop future-ready STEM leaders in the emirate's Charter Schools. The comprehensive one-year programme aims to enhance STEM teaching capacities and facilitate students' transition from high school to university. Teachers will undergo specialised training provided by Khalifa University faculty, while students will receive personalised support and guidance through a peer mentorship model.
Collaboration for academic excellence
The partnership between ADEK and Khalifa University seeks to bridge the gap between academia and industry by providing students with upskilling opportunities at any stage of their academic journey. Dr Ahmed Sultan Alshoaibi, Acting Executive Director of the Higher Education Sector at ADEK, emphasised the importance of nurturing foundational assets in Abu Dhabi's human-knowledge capital.
Teachers participating in the programme will gain insights into student proficiency levels, enabling them to tailor learning environments effectively. They will also learn how to integrate new teaching methodologies using technology and digital platforms.
Peer mentorship model
The peer mentorship approach is designed to create a supportive environment that encourages curiosity, belonging, and enhanced learning experiences. Students will be selected based on their academic performance in mathematics, as evidenced by MAP Growth study results and teachers' recommendations.
Professor Sir John O'Reilly, President at Khalifa University, highlighted the programme's alignment with UAE leadership directives aimed at boosting human capital development. The initiative seeks to equip the next generation of Emirati leaders with skills and knowledge necessary for success in STEM fields through world-class teacher training and personalised student mentorship.
Pilot phase at Al Ghad School
The programme has commenced at Al Ghad School – Charter Schools as an inaugural phase focused on enhancing problem-solving skills and empowering students to apply mathematical concepts adeptly in real-life situations. It aims to help students improve EmSAT math scores, master test-taking strategies through the ALEKS online assessment platform, strengthen academic skills, cultivate personal growth, develop communication and teamwork abilities, and foster interest in mathematics by introducing the inaugural Musabaqat math competition for high school students.
The pilot programme will employ diverse teaching methodologies tailored to participating students' learning needs. It combines a rigorous math curriculum with hands-on exercises and innovative tools such as ALEKS and peer mentoring. Following this initial phase, the programme will be implemented across all Abu Dhabi Charter Schools at a later stage.
