Exploring Janhvi Kapoor's Return To The Horror-Comedy Universe: Insights From Stree 2 Writer
In 2018, the horror-comedy film Stree, featuring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, was released and became a major success at the box office. Around that time, Maddock Films announced their plan to create a horror-comedy universe with various characters. Subsequently, it was revealed that the next film in this universe would be Roohi, starring Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and Varun Sharma.
Roohi premiered in 2021 during the pandemic but did not receive a strong response. Following Roohi, Bhediya became the third instalment in the horror-comedy universe. At the end of Bhediya, which starred Varun Dhawan, a teaser for Stree 2 was shown.

Stree 2 has turned out to be a blockbuster hit at the box office. In just 18 days, it has amassed Rs. 480.05 crore. The film is expected to surpass the Rs. 500 crore mark soon. With no significant releases on the horizon, Stree 2 is likely to continue its dominance at the box office.
Recently, Filmibeat interviewed Stree 2 writer Niren Bhatt and discussed Roohi's absence from Stree 2 despite being part of the same universe. When asked about integrating Roohi's character into future films, Bhatt explained, "Roohi's issue is that Rajkummar Rao is there playing another character, so to get that thing in this universe is a bit difficult. But yes, possibilities are always open, can't say it will not come or it will come. Right now, I haven't thought about it, but let's see how it goes."
When questioned about his current projects beyond the horror-comedy universe, Bhatt stated, "Right now, I am focusing on this. But there are 3-4 projects in the pipeline but I won't be able to reveal about it because of the NDA. There are a few big films that I am working on."
In Stree 2's storyline, both Stree and Bhediya characters appear; however, Roohi does not make an appearance. This has led to speculation about whether Roohi will return in future films within this shared universe.
The success of Stree paved the way for Maddock Films' ambitious plan to build a connected horror-comedy universe. Despite Roohi's lukewarm reception compared to its predecessors and successors like Bhediya and Stree 2, there remains potential for its characters to reappear.
The horror-comedy genre has seen varying degrees of success within this cinematic universe. While some films have become blockbusters like Stree and Stree 2, others like Roohi have struggled to make a significant impact.
The future of Maddock Films' horror-comedy universe looks promising with multiple projects in development as hinted by Niren Bhatt. Fans eagerly await how these stories will unfold and whether beloved characters from previous films will return.
This interconnected approach allows for creative storytelling opportunities while keeping audiences engaged with familiar faces and new adventures within this unique genre blend.
