Vir Das Delivers Historic Opening Monologue At International Emmys In New York
Vir Das has made history as the first Indian to host the International Emmys in New York. The event wrapped up recently, and Vir shared his much-anticipated opening monologue on social media, marking this significant achievement.
"Welcome to the 52nd Annual International Emmy Awards. My name is Vir Das. I'm your host. I'm from Mumbai in India," he began, setting a humorous tone for the evening.

Vir humorously addressed his accent, saying, "I have an Indian accent and that tends to be tough depending on where I'm traveling to for some people." He encouraged those who might not understand him to ask their bosses for clarification, especially if they are Indian.
The comedian also joked about Hollywood's tendency to remake international stories with familiar faces like Kevin Hart and Liam Neeson. He quipped about how some attendees might find themselves in American TV shows with simplified names like Guy or Joe.
Vir shared his experiences with typecasting, noting he had been offered roles like doctor Raj or lawyer Raj. He humorously mentioned turning down a role named British Raj to keep his diamonds. He suggested that major platforms should broadcast the show next year.
In a playful jab at recent events, he asked, "Who does Will Smith have to slap tonight for us to get some eyeballs?" before clarifying it was a joke about foreigners only facing sanctions or tariffs.
Acknowledging Achievements and Challenges
He reminded winners they had 30 seconds on stage and advised against making divisive remarks. "This is America and you will be elected. Sorry. Ejected," he joked, highlighting the importance of staying respectful.
Vir praised Elon Musk's intelligence and business acumen while jokingly comparing his approach to presidency with Tesla's self-driving cars: "Technically it's self-driving but ultimately I have control."
The Journey of an Artist
Reflecting on elections, Vir noted they test private convictions rather than defining beliefs. He compared politicians to gardeners who protect homes but don't provide personal care or wisdom.
He shared his journey from nominee to award winner and now host, humorously suggesting he might become the trophy next year. He acknowledged the rejection artists face more often than acceptance.
A Toast to Unity and Success
Quoting a Hindi movie line about conquering loss as victory, he urged everyone to accept each other despite competition. He joked about potential after-party antics within categories.
"Whether you win or lose, we are all the same," Vir said, envisioning everyone meeting at JFK airport later. He humorously warned of TSA agents assuming non-English speakers would face extra scrutiny if holding an Emmy.
Raising a toast, Vir concluded with congratulations: "Here is to you, you winners, you buzzy girls." His closing words celebrated unity among diverse talents gathered at the event.
