Vicky Kaushal started in the film industry as an assistant director to Anurag Kashyap for Gangs of Wasseypur. On Tanmay Bhat's YouTube show, he revealed that he was almost beaten by a sand mafia while working on the film. "The coal smuggling shown in the film (Gangs of Wasseypur) was real. We shot it," he said. He further explained, "One incident happened when we went to capture visuals of illegal sand mining."

During the shoot, Vicky was shocked to see how openly illegal sand mining occurred. "I was baffled because that was the first time I realised that this happens so openly that you wouldn't feel that this is actual smuggling going on; you would feel that it is a properly run business because there weren't just two trucks standing there, there were 500 trucks," he said. While secretly filming the scene, he got caught by some people.
"There were 500 people surrounding us," Vicky recalled. The camera attendant, an older man over 50 years old, called the unit saying they were in a difficult situation and couldn't bring the camera on time.
