Tumbbad's Remarkable Box Office Journey Post Re-Release Edges Toward 5Cr

Tumbbad Box Office Collection Day 2: The Indian box office has recently seen a trend of re-releasing classic hits in theatres. Films like Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, Veer Zara, and Maine Pyar Kiya have been shown again. The latest to join this list is Sohum Shah's Tumbbad, a folk horror film directed by Rahi Anil Barve. Released in 2018, Tumbbad stars Sohum Shah, Rudra Soni, Harsh K, and Anita Date-Kelkar.

Written by Mitesh Shah, Prasad, Rahi Anil Barve, and Anand Gandhi, Tumbbad tells the tale of a village where residents built a temple to worship Hastar, the demon god. This act led to the gods cursing the village with endless rain. The plot centres on a Konkanastha Brahmin family searching for an ancestral treasure cursed by the gods. Since its re-release on September 13, Tumbbad has received an overwhelming response from audiences.

Tumbbad Nears 5Cr Post Re-Release

Interestingly, Tumbbad is competing at the box office with Hansal Mehta's recent film The Buckingham Murders starring Kareena Kapoor Khan. This crime thriller received mixed reviews upon release. Notably, Tumbbad outperformed The Buckingham Murders on its first day. While Tumbbad earned Rs 1.5 crores on opening day, The Buckingham Murders collected Rs 1.15 crores.

Given the impressive response to Tumbbad's re-release, Sohum Shah has announced Tumbbad 2 with an intriguing teaser featuring characters Vinayak and his son Pandurang. A voiceover from Sohum Shah says, "Samay ka pahiya gol hai, jo beet gaya woh fir laut ke aayega...darwaaza bhi ek baar phir khulega."

Tumbbad had an impressive start after its re-release at the box office. Initially earning Rs 0.65 lakhs during its original release in 2018, it tripled this amount post re-release. According to media reports, Tumbbad earned Rs 1.50 crores on its first day back in theatres. Remarkably, this Sohum Shah starrer saw a further increase in collections on day two (first Saturday), with a 45% jump to Rs 2.20 crores. This brought the total earnings close to Rs 5 crores as collections now stand at Rs 3.70 crores.

The re-release trend has breathed new life into iconic films like Tumbbad. Audiences have shown great enthusiasm for revisiting these cinematic experiences on the big screen once more.
