Payal Kapadia has garnered international acclaim, winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her debut feature 'All We Imagine as Light'. Before this, she won the Golden Eye at Cannes for her documentary 'A Night of Knowing Nothing' and premiered her short film 'Afternoon Clouds' at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Her achievements make her only the second Indian to win the Grand Prix since 1946. In her acceptance speech, she urged for more Indian films in competition, advocating for change in Indian cinema.
An FTII graduate, Mitakshara Kumar is renowned for directing 'The Empire' and serving as an episodic director on 'Heeramandi'. Known for her expertise with period pieces, she has worked on films like 'Bluffmaster', 'I Am', and 'Padmavat'. She once mentioned that she gets bored when not on set, reflecting her passion for filmmaking. Currently, she is preparing for her feature debut, a female-centric comedy-drama produced by Nikhil Advani's Emmay Entertainment.
Sudha Kongara
Sudha Kongara, a two-time Indian National Award-winning filmmaker-screenwriter, began as a screenwriter on Revathy's 'Mitr, My Friend'. She debuted with the Telugu film 'Andhra Andagadu' and later directed Tamil features like 'Drohi'. Her Hindi-Tamil film 'Saala Khadoos' earned widespread acclaim before she delivered the blockbuster 'Sorrarai Pottru'. Her latest project includes the much-anticipated feature 'Sarfira', starring Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan. Kongara's films have not only been box office hits but have also travelled to numerous international film festivals.
Zoya Akhtar has successfully merged commerce with art in filmmaking. Recognised both in India and internationally, she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She broke norms by presenting films like 'Bombay Talkies' and 'Gully Boy' at major film festivals. Co-founding Tiger Baby with Reema Kagti, Zoya continues to produce and support diverse storytellers and compelling narratives.
Anjali Menon
Anjali Menon is a filmmaker and founder of the Women in Cinema Collective in Kerala. Her short film 'Black Nor White' won multiple awards. Her feature debut 'Manjadikuru' also received numerous accolades at international film festivals. Films like 'Ustaad Cafe' and 'Bangalore Days' earned her national recognition. She founded Little Films to support fiction and non-fiction formats. Besides filmmaking, Anjali is a motivational speaker who sparked important conversations with her TED Talk on societal biases. She is currently working on a new project with KRG Studios.
Rima Das: A One-Woman Army
Rima Das is an influential young Indian filmmaker known for directing, filming, and editing her own movies. Her notable works include ‘Village Rockstars’, India’s official entry to the Academy Awards, ‘Bulbul Can Sing’, and ‘Tora’s Husband’. Her upcoming film ‘Malati, My Love’ involves Singapore-based production company Akanga Film Asia. Rima has been instrumental in bringing Assamese cinema to global attention.
