Tawseef Mir Explores Industry's Curiosity Towards Kashmiri Actors In His Film Debut
Tawseef Mir is stepping into the spotlight with his debut in Onir's film, "We Are Faheem & Karun." Originating from Kashmir, Tawseef began his career as a model. The film tells a queer love story, with Tawseef portraying the character Faheem. In a conversation with Filmibeat, he shared insights about the movie, industry reactions to a Kashmiri actor, and more.
"I'm definitely feeling a mix of excitement and nerves! It's surreal to think about stepping into this role, especially with such a complex character like Faheem. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to bring authenticity to his story, especially given the personal and political layers involved. It's exhilarating, but there's also that pressure to do justice to the character and the narrative. So, it's a blend of anticipation, excitement, and a little bit of anxiety-like any first!"

The industry has few actors from Kashmir, making Tawseef's journey unique. During auditions, he noticed curiosity about his background. This often led to surprise and intrigue among those he met. Initially, there was a tendency to typecast Kashmiri actors into specific roles.
However, as audiences embrace diverse narratives, there's growing interest in fresh stories. The industry is evolving to include varied voices and perspectives. This shift is opening doors for actors like Tawseef to bring authentic stories from regions like Kashmir.
Tawseef faced concerns about playing a queer character in his debut film. Some suggested it might limit future roles. Yet he drew inspiration from Shah Rukh Khan's early career choices. Khan played a gay character in his first TV film but went on to have diverse roles.
Similarly, Ayushmann Khurrana addressed this issue when questioned about his role in "Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan." He highlighted that such questions are rarely asked of actors playing heterosexual characters.
Aspiring Collaborations
Tawseef dreams of working with director Imtiaz Ali due to Ali's skill in capturing complex emotions and relationships. Films like "Rockstar" left a lasting impact on him. He believes Ali brings out authentic performances from actors.
On-screen romance with Alia Bhatt is another aspiration for Tawseef. He admires her versatility and depth in acting. Acting alongside her would be both thrilling and educational for him.
Film Festival Premiere
"We Are Faheem And Karun" recently premiered at the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF). This event marks an important milestone for Tawseef as he embarks on his acting journey.
