Subhash Ghai Chronicles His Cinematic Brilliance In New Memoir 'Karma's Child' Co-Written With Suveen Sinha

Subhash Ghai, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, has documented his remarkable journey through "Karma's Child: The Story of Indian Cinema's Ultimate Showman." Co-authored with journalist Suveen Sinha, this memoir explores Ghai's significant contributions to Bollywood from the 1970s to the 1990s. During this period, he directed fifteen films, with eleven becoming major successes like "Kalicharan," "Vidhaata," and "Taal," solidifying his role as a key figure in Hindi cinema's golden era.

Ghai's innovative approach to filmmaking is evident in his ability to assemble star-studded casts and launch future Bollywood stars. His forward-thinking mindset is highlighted by his efforts to combat video piracy, introduce film soundtracks on audio CDs, and expand Hindi cinema's global reach. These contributions not only defined a crucial era in cinema but also set standards for future filmmakers.

Subhash Ghai Releases New Memoir 'Karma's Child'

Beyond directing films, Ghai has made a lasting impact through Whistling Woods International, India's premier film and creative arts institute. Here, he focuses on nurturing new talent and guiding the next generation of film industry professionals. "Karma's Child" provides an introspective look at Ghai's transformation from a dreamer to a cinematic legend, reflecting the dramatic flair seen in his movies.

Expressing his deep connection to the film industry and personal journey, Subhash Ghai stated, "Countless stars are born in our film industry and just as many fade away. What you hold in your hands is the story of how a young man came from nowhere, faced the challenges before him, and carved his own path. This book is the story of the Hindi film industry as it unfolded before my eyes from the 1960s till today."

Suveen Sinha expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Ghai on this memoir, sharing admiration for Ghai's work. "I was mesmerized by the rotating sign of LION in Kalicharan. I cheered when Jackie limped to save his love in Hero. I danced to one two ka four in Ram Lakhan. To work with Subhash Ghai on this memoir feels like a dream come true. We wanted to write this book as the story of the Hindi film industry told from the perspective of its biggest showman, which is why we chose to narrate it in the third person. That makes it a unique celebrity memoir."

Udayan Mitra from HarperCollins highlighted the memoir's appeal, comparing its humor and drama to watching a Subhash Ghai film. Anticipation for "Karma's Child" is high ahead of its launch on 15th November 2024 at Mumbai’s National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). Part of the Literature Live festival starting at 4:30 PM, it will feature Gulzar Sahab and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali discussing the memoir.
