Soham Shah Discusses Comparison Between His Film 'Luck' And 'Squid Game'
Kartam Bhugtam: Filmmaker Soham Shah made his directorial debut with Kaal in 2005. He later directed Luck in 2009, featuring Imran Khan, Shruti Haasan, and Sanjay Dutt. Upon its release, Luck received mixed reviews and did not perform well at the box office. However, in 2021, the film gained renewed attention following the success of the South Korean series Squid Game on Netflix.
Luck revolves around a group of individuals participating in perilous adventures where their survival depends on their luck. Similarly, Squid Game features participants playing various games with fatal consequences for the losers. The striking resemblance between the two concepts led Indian audiences to draw comparisons on social media, asserting that India had explored this theme before Korea.

In a recent interaction with Filmibeat, Soham Shah shared his thoughts on the newfound recognition of his work. He said, "One fine day, I suddenly wake up and all my friends, assistants and people around me start sending me these news articles and interviews about Squid Game. I genuinely felt very happy because it didn't work at the box office at that time, but 10 years later people are identifying it."
Shah further commented on the Indian audience's response: "Believe me, Indian audience is such that when something is ticked marked by some makers abroad, then they will give you more respect. So, NRI friends and NRI audience, they all were like 'Oh Soham you did Squid Game...' Chalo 10 saal baad credit mila, but achcha hai mila toh sahi, so you feel good."
Shreyas Talpade, who will appear in Soham's upcoming film Kartam Bhugtam, added his perspective: "It worked or it didn't work, but no one has forgotten that film. It's not like it just came and went; it stayed with you. It might not have worked at the box office at that time, but somewhere and something must have stayed with people, and that's why we are talking about it even after 10 years."
Kartam Bhugtam also stars Madhoo in a significant role, marking her return to Bollywood. The movie is scheduled for release on 17th May 2024.
