Shabana Azmi And Naseeruddin Shah Reflect On Shyam Benegal's Creative Legacy At Memorial Service

Filmmaker Shyam Benegal's recent passing has left a void in the film industry. His close friends and collaborators, Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah, fondly remembered his "wide, warm smile" and unwavering dedication to his craft. A memorial service was held at Y B Chavan Centre in Mumbai, attended by notable figures like Javed Akhtar and Divya Dutta, to honour Benegal's legacy.

Benegal passed away on December 23 due to chronic kidney disease, shortly after celebrating his 90th birthday on December 14. He leaves behind his wife Nira and daughter Pia. Azmi, who debuted in Benegal's first feature film "Ankur" in 1974, described him as her mentor despite his reluctance to be called one. She said, "He didn't want to be called anyone's guru, but nevertheless he was my guru."

Remembering Shyam Benegal: A Tribute by Azmi and Shah

Azmi recalled her first encounter with Benegal at the ASP office in 1973. She was struck by his warm smile as he sought actors for "Ankur." Their collaboration extended to films like "Nishant," "Mandi," and "Junoon." Azmi shared her last memory of him from his 90th birthday celebration, where he left with the same warm smile.

Naseeruddin Shah highlighted Benegal's commitment to creativity. He stated that death is insignificant compared to how one uses their time. Shah admired how Benegal dedicated every moment of his life to creative pursuits. He worked with Benegal on iconic films such as "Nishant," "Manthan," and "Mandi."

Azmi shared a personal story about Benegal's romantic side. On the day of his wedding to Nira, he sent her yellow flowers every hour until they married. She humorously remarked that she might have postponed the wedding due to this lovely gesture.

Atul Tiwari presented a book titled "Maestro - A Tribute to Shyam Benegal" at the memorial service. Ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar praised Benegal for inspiring everyone around him. Kakkar noted that Benegal taught them that everything related to filmmaking was their responsibility.

Legacy of Inspiration

Kakkar admired Benegal's generosity and ability to teach and inspire others. He recounted how Benegal encouraged actors and writers to reach their potential. This spirit of mentorship was considered one of Benegal's greatest gifts to those who worked with him.

The memorial service served as a testament to Shyam Benegal's enduring impact on Indian cinema. His dedication and warmth continue to inspire those who knew him personally or through his work.
