Sheena Chohan Dedicates Comedy Role Award To Advocate For Women's Safety
Sheena Chohan received the Best Actress in a Comedy Role Award at the ILLA Awards held at Taj Lands End, Mumbai, for her portrayal of Shreya in the web series Ex Mates. Her character, a modern Mumbai woman, was brought to life through extensive research. Sheena's acceptance speech and vibrant look captivated the audience.
Sheena, who previously called for mandatory human rights education in India during a United Nations speech, reiterated this message at the ILLA Awards. She stated: "Of course there must be justice, but no amount of punishment will bring the victim's life back. Our focus must be on making women safe by preventing future crimes and the way to achieve that is to educate boys, before they become men, to give women respect."

As an ambassador for United for Human Rights South Asia, Sheena was approached by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights to help promote the UN's 75th anniversary of human rights. Her collaborations with artists like Preety Zinta and Sonakshi Sinha included podcasts on topics such as Don't Discriminate and Freedom of Thought.
Sheena used her platform at the awards to address women's safety in India. She said: "I'm a Kolkatta girl and recent events have reminded me that the most important issue for women in India is safety. We must come together and use our voices to educate people that women deserve respect."
In her award speech, Sheena emphasised the power of artists' voices: "As artists, we have such a powerful voice, but it's time we use that voice in a positive way. While films are entertainment, they are also a form of education." She dedicated her award to using collective voices for positive change.
Sheena's work has reached 175 million people through her efforts to spread awareness about basic rights and equality. She was honoured with the Human Rights Hero Award at the United Nations for these contributions.
