Shahid Kapoor Keen On 'Kaminey' Sequel, Praises Original Film's Legacy
Actor Shahid Kapoor expressed his enthusiasm for a sequel to the critically-acclaimed drama "Kaminey," which marked its 15th anniversary on August 14, 2023. The film, released in 2009, is one of Kapoor's most cherished works and began his collaboration with director Vishal Bhardwaj. They later worked together on "Haider" in 2014 and "Rangoon" in 2017.
"Kaminey" features Kapoor in dual roles as estranged twins Charlie and Guddu. The film is set against the backdrop of Mumbai's underworld, weaving a tale of crime, corruption, and deceit. Charlie, who has a lisp, is a small-time crook with big dreams, while Guddu, who stutters, is an honest NGO worker. The contrasting characters added depth to the narrative.

Kapoor shared his excitement about the film's originality and his experience working with talented actors. He said, "It ('Kaminey') was probably the most original piece of content I had heard ever in my career at that time. It was an amazing experience. I worked with really good actors and I wish we do another one."
The film also starred Priyanka Chopra as Guddu's love interest and Amol Gupte as the antagonist. Bhardwaj, known for his musical talents, composed hit tracks like "Dhan Te Nan," "Kaminey," "Pehli Baar Mohabbat Ki Hai," and "Raat Ke Dhai Baje," with lyrics by Gulzar. These songs contributed significantly to the film's success.
Reflecting on his collaboration with Bhardwaj, Kapoor expressed gratitude for being trusted with such complex characters. He said, "I had done nothing in my acting career to deserve that opportunity. It was really his vision or instinct, whatever one calls it."
Impact on Kapoor's Career
"Kaminey" was a pivotal film for Kapoor, allowing him to explore new dimensions in his acting career. He recalled feeling both fear and excitement about taking on the challenging roles of Charlie and Guddu. "I was afraid to do it but being very pumped to do that film because I was like, 'This is an opportunity to open a second dimension in my career,'" he said.
The actor believes that "Kaminey" was ahead of its time by introducing the pulp genre to Indian cinema. He noted that it brought something new to audiences who had not seen such content before.
Future Projects
Kapoor's recent work includes the film "Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya," where he starred opposite Kriti Sanon. His upcoming release is titled "Deva," featuring Pooja Hegde.
As Kapoor continues to explore diverse roles and genres, fans eagerly await potential sequels and new collaborations with visionary directors like Vishal Bhardwaj.
