25 Years Of Sarfarosh: Shah Rukh Khan Initially Picked Over Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan's Iconic Role in Sarfarosh Was Initially Intended for Another Star
Aamir Khan's portrayal of ACP Ajay Singh in Sarfarosh is often cited as one of the most impactful performances of his career. The character, who forsakes medical studies to join the Indian Police Service in retaliation for his brother's murder by terrorists, has become iconic. Yet, it has been disclosed by the film's director that Aamir was not the first choice for this role.

Director John Matthew Matthan shed light on the casting process, revealing an initial preference for Shah Rukh Khan to play the lead. The decision was driven by financial considerations, with the belief that Shah Rukh's involvement could lead to greater savings. Matthan recounted, "All of them suggested I take Shah Rukh. I said, 'Listen, I don't think Shah Rukh suits my role. I don't have him in my mind,' but they said that we would be able to save more money."
The director's quest for the perfect ACP Ajay Singh didn't end with these discussions. Upon meeting Aamir Khan and presenting him with the script, Matthan found his ideal candidate. Aamir's acceptance of the role marked a pivotal moment in the film's development. Matthan observed, "Then I met Aamir. He read the script and said yes. So then I started studying Aamir, what he had done and he had done only love stories. I felt that was good because he was unassuming."
This revelation highlights a significant behind-the-scenes decision that ultimately contributed to Sarfarosh's success and Aamir Khan's celebrated filmography. The choice to cast Aamir over Shah Rukh Khan underscores the complexities and nuances of casting decisions in Bollywood and their lasting impact on cinematic history.
