Sanjay Leela Bhansali Reflects On The Timeless Legacy Of Padmaavat Seven Years After Its Release
Seven years ago, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Padmaavat set a new standard for grandeur in Indian cinema. The movie tells the legendary story of Padmavati, featuring lavish sets, detailed costumes, and moving music. With outstanding performances by Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor, it stands as one of Bhansali's most ambitious works, combining captivating storytelling with exceptional visual artistry.
Bhansali shared his fascination with Padmavati's story since childhood. He stated, "It is based on the poem Padmawat by Malik Mohammed Jayasi. However, it also has figures and incidents taken from actual history. I have been fascinated by Padmavati since childhood. Her grace, dignity, valour, and inner strength are very inspiring."

The director had long dreamed of bringing Padmavati's life to the screen. Before making the film, he directed a stage musical version: "I wanted to make a film on her life for a very long time. But before I could do the film, I got the chance to direct the stage musical version of Padmavati, an opera in two acts by the French composer Albert Roussel that I directed in Paris in 2008."
Bhansali described his experience with the stage musical as unique: "That Padmavati was a staged musical done on a lavish scale with elephants, tigers, and other animals on stage. It was an entirely different experience from the film." This project marked his first deep exploration into portraying evil on such a grand scale.
Each scene and performance in Padmaavat has solidified its status as one of Indian cinema's greatest films. Its timeless appeal continues as it gears up for a theatrical re-release on February 6, 2025. Originally grossing over ₹500 crore worldwide, it remains one of India's highest-grossing films.
The film's success is attributed to its compelling narrative and visual brilliance. As audiences anticipate its return to theaters, they can once again experience this cinematic spectacle on the big screen.
