Ronnie Screwvala: Prioritising Storytelling Over Box Office Results

Producer Ronnie Screwvala is renowned for his bold choices and pioneering efforts in storytelling. His production company, RSVP Movies, is gearing up for the release of the new web series 'Pill'. This series will feature Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh and national award-winning director Raj Kumar Gupta in their web series debut. 'Pill' will be available for streaming on JioCinema Premium starting 12th July.

In a recent discussion, Ronnie Screwvala shared his views on the entertainment industry. He stated, "I don't think the industry needs bigger hits, it needs a lot of good content. It doesn't need peaks and drops because then it's not an industry. So, I am all for the fact that more and more good content needs to come up. I also feel that we are too extreme now on judging everything based on budget and a box office outcome and I don't think it's the future of storytelling. It's not the future of audiences. So, the question is why are we trying to set a benchmark? Every year is different for all sectors. In fact, today, I would much rather go for better storytelling and I would like to lower profile the aspect of box office being the only judgment of success."

Screwvala elaborated on the storyline of 'Pill', saying it is fictional with no finger-pointing involved. He mentioned that health and medicine are highly relevant themes post-pandemic. The creative team chose this theme to explore its darker aspects while maintaining balance by highlighting positive issues within the sector.

He explained, "Pill is a fictional story and there is no finger-pointing. Coming out of a pandemic, health and medicine is a very relevant theme. So, we took a very current theme and then looked at the sector. Every sector has a dark side. Airline, Banking or any other. So that is where the creative producer and director have to choose showing and raising positive issues. That is how I choose. It is about balance."
