Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' Secures Two Nominations At The Golden Globes
Payal Kapadia's film "All We Imagine As Light" has achieved significant recognition, receiving two nominations at the Golden Globes. The film is nominated for Best Motion Picture Non-English Language and Best Direction - Motion Picture. This marks a historic moment as it became the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix award at Cannes in May. The movie continues to earn accolades as Hollywood prepares for its awards season, culminating with the Oscars.
The narrative of "All We Imagine As Light" revolves around three women in Mumbai: two Malayali nurses and their friend, a cook. Competing in the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture category, it faces contenders like "Emilia Perez" from France and "The Girl With the Needle" from Poland. In the Best Director category, Kapadia is up against directors such as Brady Corbet for "The Brutalist" and Jacques Audiard for "Emilia Perez".

Kapadia's debut feature has garnered international praise since its Cannes premiere, where it was one of the best-reviewed films. Although not selected as India's official entry for the Academy Awards' International Feature Film category, it is anticipated to receive Oscar nominations in other categories. Recently, it was named Best International Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and won a similar award at the Gotham Awards.
The film also topped Sight and Sound magazine's annual list of 50 best movies of the year. In the US, Janus Films and Sideshow are handling its distribution, while Rana Daggubati's Spirit Media released it across India in November.
Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, Kapadia's film delves into themes of love and friendship amidst Mumbai's vibrant backdrop. It follows two Malayali nurses, Prabha and Anu, along with their friend Parvati. The 2025 Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled for January 5 in Los Angeles.
Kapadia, aged 39 and an FTII graduate, previously directed acclaimed works like "Afternoon Clouds" and "A Night of Knowing Nothing". Despite not being India's official Oscar entry, her film continues to gain momentum internationally.
