Navjyot Bandiwadekar Explores Cultural Ties In Gharat Ganpati And Its Influence On Marathi Cinema
Navjyot Bandiwadekar Exclusive: Renowned filmmaker Navjyot Bandiwadekar, celebrated for his unique storytelling and deep narrative techniques, has released the trailer for his Marathi film, Gharat Ganpati. Known for focusing on human emotions and relationships rather than grand productions, he once again brings a story rich in culture and family bonds.
After creating award-winning short films like 'Flawless' (2012), 'Emma' (2012), and 'Quarter' (2020), Navjyot is venturing into feature films with this project. The trailer is already generating excitement on social media, and the songs are trending. We had the opportunity to speak with him about his journey with Gharat Ganpati.

The grandeur of Gharat Ganpati is evident in its trailers. What elements did you focus on to create such a magnificent film?
"Creating Gharat Ganpati was an amazing experience. Multiple things were taken into consideration to make it stand out. Authenticity was key for us. Accurately depicting the cultural richness of Maharashtra; choosing the right cast; paying close attention to the settings to reflect the true essence of Ganpati celebrations; music and costumes—everything was carefully curated to make the film authentic and appealing."
The songs from Gharat Ganpati are going viral! How was your experience working with Vishal Dadlani & Javed Ali on the music for the movie?
"It feels really nice to see that the songs are doing so well. Speaking about working with Vishal Dadlani and Javed Ali, it was a fulfilling experience. Their approach to music brought a unique energy to the film. They understood the cultural context and worked to create music that was magical. The collaboration was insightful and has only added more depth to the film."
Personal Growth Through Filmmaking
How has directing Gharat Ganpati contributed to your personal growth, both as a filmmaker and as an individual?
"Directing Gharat Ganpati was a learning journey. It taught me the value of patience, detailed observation, and the power of collaboration. I have learned so much by being observant on and off set. It has improved my storytelling. On a personal level, it strengthened my connection to my cultural roots and made me more empathetic in my storytelling."
Appealing Across Generations
In Gharat Ganpati, you've blended traditional themes with modern storytelling. How do you think these will appeal to both the older and younger generations?
"The current generation lacks knowledge about our traditions. And from multiple other reasons, cinema is also responsible. With Gharat Ganpati, we aimed to connect with both generations. For older viewers, the film offers a reflection of familiar cultural values. For younger audiences, we included contemporary characters and situations that they could relate to. This blend helps make the story engaging for all age groups."
Support for Regional Cinema
Ever since the trailer's release, there's been talk about how Marathi people should come forward in support. What are your thoughts on this?
"Regional cinema helps preserve and promote our cultural identity. While Marathi moviegoers want a magnus opus movie with a stellar cast and great storyline, when such movies really come out, the audience's support is missing. By backing films like Gharat Ganpati, the community can help these stories reach a broader audience and encourage more filmmakers to explore Marathi narratives. This support can drive the growth and recognition of Marathi cinema."
Future Contributions to Marathi Cinema
With the rise of Marathi cinema, what contributions do you hope to make in this industry?
"I hope to create films that highlight the richness of Marathi culture and tell stories that matter. My aim is to bring innovative storytelling techniques and high production standards to Marathi cinema. I want to inspire other filmmakers to explore diverse genres and narratives, pushing the boundaries of regional cinema."
Collaborations with Bollywood
Do you have any plans to collaborate with Bollywood stars or directors in your upcoming projects?
"I'm more than elated to share projects with Bollywood. After all, that is the ultimate dream of any artist, be it an actor, singer, or director. Working with Bollywood stars and directors is not just a dream but also a valuable learning experience."
Diverse Future Projects
What kind of projects can we expect from you in the future? Are there any particular genres or stories you are eager to explore?
"You can expect a variety of projects as I am interested in exploring historical dramas, contemporary social issues, and more. I aim to experiment with different narrative styles and filmmaking techniques to create impactful cinema."
