National Indian Film Festival Of Australia To Celebrate Indian Cinema Across Seven Cities In February 2025
The Australian Centre for Indian Cinema has unveiled plans for the National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA), set to be the largest celebration of Indian cinema in Australasia. Scheduled from 13-16 February 2025, this festival will mark a significant cultural event.
Spanning seven cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, NIFFA will feature screenings and celebrations. A city yet to be chosen will host key events like the opening night party and workshops. The festival will also introduce development grants for Australian content related to India.

Dendy Cinemas, NDTV, and Val Morgan are among the stakeholders supporting this initiative. Anupam Sharma, a filmmaker and expert on Indian cinema in Australia, is leading the festival with Peter Castaldi as director. Both have extensive experience in promoting Indian cinema in Australia since the 1990s.
Sanjay Pugalia of NDTV expressed enthusiasm about partnering with NIFFA. "As NDTV expands globally and the Indian diaspora flourishes across Australasia, partnering with this premier celebration of Indian cinema felt like a perfect fit," he said.
Sharon Strickland from Dendy Cinema highlighted their commitment to showcasing diverse stories through this collaboration. "Dendy Cinema is honoured to partner with the National Indian Film Festival of Australia," she stated, emphasising the global impact of Indian films.
Anupam Sharma noted Australia's desire for a national celebration of Indian cinema. He expressed gratitude for support from mainstream partners like Dendy and NDTV. "This will be one of the rare film festivals which will be produced by filmmakers," Sharma added.
Festival's Broader Impact
Peter Castaldi shared his excitement about his role in this Indo-Australian cultural initiative. He mentioned the importance of offering audiences a curated experience of India's diverse production sector. "I look forward to working with the NIFFA to deliver exciting experiences for all Australians," he said.
Paul MacGregor from Val Morgan pointed out the growing interest in Indian films in Australia over recent years. He sees NIFFA as an opportunity for brands to engage with culturally diverse audiences.
Future Announcements
The festival has garnered support from major distributors across Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. Additional partners and details about retrospectives will be revealed at a press conference in November at IFFI Goa.
The full program and award specifics are set to be announced on 6 January 2025. The festival promises to offer a vibrant showcase of Indian cinema across Australia from 13-16 February 2025.
