Mr And Mrs Mahi Review: Cricket Drama Misses The Mark
Mr And Mrs Mahi Review: Jamhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao starrer Mr & Mrs Mahi was announced a few years ago, and now, it has finally hit the big screens today. The movie is directed by Sharan Sharma who had earlier directed Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, which also featured Janhvi in the lead role. While Gunjan Saxena was a well-made film, is Mr & Mrs Mahi worth a watch? Find out in our review below.
Mahendra (Rajkummar Rao) dreams of becoming a cricketer but he doesn't get selected. After a few years, he gets married to a girl named Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor) and coincidentally, their nickname is similar, Mahi (of course, MS Dhoni's nickname as well). Mahima, who is actually a doctor, is also very interested in cricket and Mahendra decides to train her and make her a cricketer. But, while Mahima becomes successful, Mahendra starts feeling jealous that he is not getting any credit for it. How these two fight all the odds in personal and professional life forms the rest of the story.

Mr & Mrs Mahi is written by Nikhil Mehrotra and Sharan Sharma, with the latter also directing it. The first half of the movie is very slow and you will actually feel like nothing interesting is happening. In the second half, the movie becomes a bit better when the training of Mahima starts, but apart from a few sequences, there's nothing that can keep you hooked to the screens. Also, the concept of wife becoming successful and husband feeling jealous of it has been explored a few times earlier in Bollywood, and the makers have shown the whole story in the trailer itself, so there's nothing new or great to watch in the movie.
When we watch a sports-drama, the most important thing is that a theatre should be converted into a stadium with some thrilling scenes that keep us on the edge of the seat, but that doesn't happen here. Apart from the last sixer that Mahima hits, there's not even a single cricket scene that impresses or gives you goosebumps.
The good thing about the film is that there are a few comedy scenes that will surely make you laugh out loud. But, we don't go to theatres to laugh when we are expecting a sports-drama.
Rajkumar Rao as Mahendra is good in his part and there are scenes where he shines. But, surely the show stealer is Mrs Mahi, Janhvi Kapoor. The actress with each and every film is improving and proving that she has the potential to perform very well. As Mahima, Janhvi gets multiple layers to play, and she has done a very good job here. We can also see that the actress has put in a lot of effort to get the sport right.
If we talk about the supporting cast, Kumud Mishra gets the best role to portray and he has given a fantastic performance. But unfortunately, Zarina Wahab gets the same role of mother which offers nothing great. Also, Yamini Das, who made us laugh out loud in Haseen Dilruba, is wasted here. Arjit Taneja is decent in his cameo.
Well, none of the songs have the element to become a chartbuster. Dekhha Tenu does leave a mark when it comes on the big screens.
Mr And Mrs Mahi Review Final Verdict
Overall, Mr & Mrs Mahi is simply a boring, predictable film offering nothing new. It is like watching the cricket version of Abhimaan. So, you can surely skip it.
