Moli Explores Themes Of Heartache In 'The Raga Of A Broken Heart'

Emerging from the vibrant landscape of India's music scene, experimental musician Anmol Gupta, better known by his stage name Moli, is set to captivate audiences with his latest single 'The Raga of a Broken Heart'. This track, a highlight of his debut album 'Retrogression Progression', melds psychedelic rock with traditional music elements, underpinned by a distinctive filmic concept. Moli's journey into the creation of this single was sparked by a deep personal loss he encountered three years ago, propelling him into the realms of Hindustani classical music and the intricate Raga Bhairavi.

"One evening, the track emerged as I was experimenting with the raga and incorporating various elements. Suddenly, it evolved into a fusion of two ragas," Moli recounted. This exploration birthed a novel sonic landscape that characterizes 'The Raga of a Broken Heart'. With previous collaborations with indie rock stalwarts Parikrama and Indian Ocean, Moli leverages his eclectic musical prowess in this venture. He is proficient in 14 different instruments, favoring drums, saxophone, keys, piano, synths, and guitar.

Moli's Musical Heartache Journey

The accompanying music video for 'The Raga of a Broken Heart', which Moli describes as akin to a 'film', was filmed over three days and is imbued with rich symbolism. It vividly captures Moli's emotional journey through the use of fire, vibrant colours, and shadows. Notably, it features a daring scene where Moli sets his hand ablaze without resorting to CGI effects. The video also weaves in elements of Sufism to articulate Moli's spiritual quest.

Despite the hurdles associated with being a psychedelic rock artist in a predominantly Bollywood-focused nation, Moli, born in 1999, has carved a niche for himself within the music industry. Embarking on his musical odyssey at the tender age of nine, he has risen to become one of the foremost young experimental psychedelic artists on the global stage. A testament to his unique sound is his feature on Spotify's International "Modern Psychedelia" playlist, placing him alongside globally celebrated acts like Tame Impala and Crumb.

Looking ahead, Moli is gearing up for his India Tour, set to enthrall fans across several cities: Delhi on 5th April, Pune on 12th April, Bengaluru on 13th April, and Goa on 14th April. This tour is anticipated to be a deep dive into Moli's innovative musical and visual artistry, offering audiences an unparalleled glimpse into his creative universe.
