MIFF 2024: Ketan Mehta Discusses Global Strategy In Animation

MIFF 2024: The fourth day of the 18th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) featured an engaging panel discussion. Renowned filmmaker Ketan Mehta, actor-producer Jackky Bhagnani, Emmy-nominated filmmaker Vaibhav Kumareshwar, and filmmaker Mohammad Kherandish were the key speakers. Munjal Shroff, an animation filmmaker, moderated the discussion.

One key topic was the evolution of animation films and the travelability of content. The panellists discussed various challenges in the industry. "When you are creating specifically for the domestic market, it has very little resonance outside the country, and that is the problem, a vicious circle we are caught in," stated Ketan Mehta about the limited international reach of domestic content.

Global Strategy in Animation at MIFF

Mehta further elaborated on the need for a global perspective. "There are two constraints as far as I can see. We haven't cultivated a global mindset, and we haven't triggered a global ambition... Creatively, there is nothing wrong with us; we are the most creative civilization the world has seen," he said. He also pointed out the high financial costs and the lack of a sustainable distribution network as significant hurdles.

Differentiation in Content

Actor-producer Jackky Bhagnani spoke about the differentiation in content today. He noted that theatrical and OTT cum broadcast content are now catered to separately, highlighting how the industry adapts content for each medium.

Global Impact of Iranian Content

Filmmaker Mohammad Kherandish provided insights into how Iranian content has successfully made a global impact. His examples showcased the potential for international recognition with the right strategies and content.

Special Screenings Across India

MIFF continues to run until the 21st of June. Special screenings are being organised in Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, and Delhi to make the festival more accessible to audiences across India. This effort aims to broaden the reach and influence of the festival's diverse content.

The panel discussion underscored the importance of a global approach to content creation. By addressing current limitations and exploring successful international examples, the industry can work towards greater global impact and accessibility.
