MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024: Sonam Kapoor Champions Word To Screen Market For Literary Adaptations
The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, in partnership with Soho House Mumbai, has created a unique environment for filmmakers and creative minds to connect. This collaboration encourages meaningful discussions within the film community. A key feature is the Word to Screen Market, which bridges literature and cinema. This platform has quickly become essential for exchanging ideas and nurturing new cinematic voices, highlighting the festival's dedication to innovative storytelling.
The 2023 Word to Screen Market was highly successful, leading to excitement for its next edition on September 26, 2024. This year, it broadened its scope by accepting non-fiction articles from print and online sources, alongside books and magazines. Out of 120 submissions, 15 titles were chosen for the Open Pitch Session. This growth reflects the market's commitment to embracing diverse storytelling formats for film adaptation.

Sonam Kapoor continues her role as the brand ambassador for Word to Screen with enthusiasm. She stated, "As an actor, I have always believed that a film is only as good as its script. It is imperative to encourage writers and publishers through an ecosystem like Word to Screen where they can ideate and collaborate with filmmakers who can bring their vision to screen in the most authentic and dynamic manner. As an avid reader, I am often drawn to roles that have been adapted from books. Such characters also bring a depth that is important to their evolution from paper to screen. Word to Screen is my attempt to give back to the art I love so much. It's a pleasure to continue my association with MAMI's Word to Screen and help enable and empower some truly engaging narratives on screen." Her words emphasise the importance of collaboration between writers, publishers, and filmmakers.
Since its start in 2016, Word to Screen has fostered many cross-industry partnerships, resulting in several book adaptations for film. Notable works include "Bhujia Barons" by Pavitra Kumar and "Indira" by Sagarika Ghose. These adaptations showcase the platform's success in bringing diverse stories from page to screen, enriching cinema with literary depth.
Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Festival Director of MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, praised Sonam Kapoor's return as Brand Ambassador for Word to Screen. He remarked on cinema's deep connection with literature: "Cinema is an amalgamation of all the arts and has been closely linked to literature over decades. Some of the greatest films in the history of cinema have been adapted from literary works and I am so pleased that MAMI has nurtured and developed this unique platform that creates a synergy that will enable filmmakers to use their craft to bring the art of the word to the screen. We value Sonam Kapoor's continued support for this initiative as its brand ambassador". His comments highlight the festival's commitment to celebrating literary adaptations in film.
The upcoming MAMI Mumbai Film Festival will take place from October 19-24, 2024. It aims to be a guiding light for the film industry by fostering new voices and collaborations while showcasing world cinema's finest offerings. The festival not only provides a platform for films but also supports building a sustainable ecosystem for filmmakers through initiatives like Word to Screen.
