MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024 Celebrates Shabana Azmi's Legacy With Excellence In Cinema Award
The festival is set to honour Shabana Azmi with the Excellence in Cinema Award, recognising her remarkable career. A special screening of her acclaimed film Arth will also take place. Azmi's contributions to both parallel and mainstream Indian cinema have made her a pioneering figure, seamlessly bridging the gap between art-house and commercial films.
Azmi's illustrious career has seen her portray a wide range of characters, collaborating with renowned filmmakers like Shyam Benegal, Mahesh Bhatt, and Satyajit Ray. Her work with directors such as Goutam Ghose, Mrinal Sen, and Basu Chatterjee further highlights her versatility. She has also worked with contemporary directors like Vishal Bhardwaj and Karan Johar.

As a founding board member of MAMI, Azmi has significantly influenced Mumbai's cinematic landscape. Her efforts have ensured that diverse films from around the globe reach audiences in Mumbai, reflecting her belief in storytelling's power to connect people across cultures.
Festival Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur expressed his admiration for Azmi: "It is a privilege for MAMI to honour Shabana Azmi, an iconic actor, with the Excellence in Cinema Award this year. Her remarkable versatility and extraordinary body of work over 50 years, beginning with her award-winning debut in 'Ankur' in 1974, has enriched the fabric of Indian cinema with some of the most memorable women characters. MAMI had the distinct pleasure of honouring her in 1999 for her remarkable contributions over 25 years, and we are fortunate to continue witnessing her work and celebrate her golden jubilee."
The Excellence in Cinema Award will be presented to Shabana Azmi on October 18. Following this event, a masterclass featuring National Award-winning actor Vidya Balan will occur on October 19. This session will delve into Azmi's experiences and insights from her five-decade-long journey in the film industry.
