Malayalam Filmmaker Shafi Passes Away At 56 After Stroke, Remembered For His Comedic Legacy
Renowned filmmaker Shafi, who brought joy to Malayali audiences with his comedic films, passed away in Kochi. He was 56 years old. Hospital sources revealed that Shafi, whose real name was Rasheed M H, had been receiving treatment following a stroke on January 16. Despite efforts, he remained in critical condition and died at 12:25 am on Saturday.
Actor Vishnu Unnikrishnan confirmed the sad news on Facebook. "Shafi sir has departed, leaving behind laughter and unforgettable stories that will be cherished forever. Tributes!!," he wrote. Shafi began his career as an assistant director under Rajasenan and made a significant impact with his debut film 'One Man Show' in 2001. Over two decades, he directed more than ten films, becoming known for his comedic touch.

Shafi's collaborations with actor Dileep resulted in several hits like 'Kalyanaraman', 'Marykkundoru Kunjaadu', and 'Two Countries'. His other notable works include 'Pulival Kalyanam', 'Thommanum Makkalum', 'Mayavi', and 'Chattambinadu'. These films cemented his status as a leading director in Malayalam cinema. His last film was 'Aanandam Paramanandam' released in 2022.
The body of the late filmmaker was moved to his home on BTS Road in Edappally. It will be available for public viewing at the Cochin Service Co-operative Bank Hall in Kaloor from 9 am to 12 pm on Sunday. The cremation is set for 4 pm at the Kaloor Muslim Juma Masjid, according to family members.
Shafi's elder brother Rafi is part of the well-known writer-director duo Rafi-Mecartin. Additionally, their uncle was Siddique, a celebrated filmmaker who also left a mark on the industry. These connections highlight the family's deep roots in Malayalam cinema.
Shafi's contributions to cinema have left an indelible mark, especially through his ability to craft memorable comedies that resonated with audiences. His legacy will continue through his films and the laughter they bring.
