Maa Kaali Teaser Explores The Brutal Partition Of Bengal And The Great Calcutta Killing

Maa Kaali Teaser: The teaser for Raima Sen's film Maa Kaali was released on July 4th. The plot, centred on the brutal partition of Bengal, reveals a haunting narrative of 'the great Calcutta killing' or 'the Direct Action Day,' which eventually led to India's partition. The period drama also features IAS officer turned actor Abhishek Singh alongside Raima Sen.

The Great Calcutta Killing, also known as The Direct Action Day, occurred on August 16, 1946. On this day, the All-India Muslim League called for 'direct action' to demand a separate homeland for Muslims after the British left India. This led to widespread communal riots and violence between Muslims and Hindus in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in British India's Bengal province. The four-day riot, infamously known as the Week of Long Knives, resulted in 10,000 deaths and 15,000 severe injuries.

Maa Kaali: Bengal's Dark Past Revealed

The film is largely based on the harrowing events of the Calcutta Killing and the Noakhali massacres, which had long-term political consequences. It highlights the forgotten history of Bengal and shows how Bengali Hindus suffered atrocities on the brink of Independence, leaving a lasting impact even after nearly eight decades.

Discussing this, director Vijay Yelakanti said, "Although it is directly related to one of the most significant chapters of our modern Indian history, Direct Action Day continues to be an untold story of human suffering."
