Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: A Stark Reminder Of Societal And Patriarchal Failings

Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Case: Have we ever considered that the next victim could be one of us? It's a chilling thought. The 31-year-old trainee doctor likely never imagined, when the Nirbhaya case shook Delhi 12 years ago, that she would one day be at the centre of a similar national outcry for justice. She may have dreamed of achieving nationwide recognition through her hard work, but not in this tragic way. Perhaps she wanted to join rallies and protests for Nirbhaya but was held back by family or a busy schedule. Maybe she aspired to challenge the system and speak against chauvinism but was warned against it.

Our homes and workplaces should be sanctuaries, yet women often don't feel safe even there. Public transport and large gatherings are even more daunting. Many women have had bitter experiences that are too painful to recount. If home were truly safe, minors wouldn't face molestation by family members. If workplaces were secure, the RG Kar hospital incident wouldn't have occurred. But what drives this issue? Is it solely men's fault? Women also internalise patriarchal norms from a young age, which perpetuates chauvinism in society.

Kolkata Case: Societal Failings Exposed

The brutal gang-rape and murder at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata united thousands of women on August 15, Independence Day. But why did it take so long for such unity? Why did another tragedy have to occur? What have we learned from the Nirbhaya case? As a society, we've learned little; we've implemented no significant safety measures and haven't started change within our own homes.

Despite the horror, it's heartening to see how this brutality has blurred borders as people demand justice. From Pakistan to New York City, individuals have joined protests in solidarity. Not just women, but men and transgender people have also participated, showing there's still hope for change.
