Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case Sparks Global Protests And Questions Societal Norms

Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Case: Have we ever considered that the next victim could be one of us? It's a chilling thought. The 31-year-old trainee doctor likely never imagined this when the Nirbhaya case occurred in Delhi 12 years ago. She probably dreamed of gaining nationwide recognition for her achievements, not for a tragic end. Perhaps she wanted to join rallies and protests for Nirbhaya but couldn't due to family or work commitments. Maybe she aspired to change the system and speak against chauvinism but was discouraged from doing so.

It took a horrific gang-rape and murder at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata to unite thousands of women on August 15, Independence Day. But why did it take so long? Why did we need another incident to act? What have we learned from The Nirbhaya Case? As a society, we've learned nothing. We haven't implemented safety measures or started making changes at home.

Global Protests Over Kolkata Case

The brutality against this young woman has blurred borders as people demand justice. From Pakistan to New York City, individuals have joined protests in solidarity. Not only women but also men and transgenders have participated, showing there is still hope for change.

Our homes and workplaces should be safe havens, yet women can't feel secure even there. Every woman has faced some form of bitter experience, whether in public transport or large gatherings. If home were safe, minors wouldn't be molested by family members. If workplaces were safe, the RG Kar case wouldn't have happened either.

What causes this lack of safety? Is it solely men's fault? Women also internalise patriarchal norms from a young age, which perpetuates chauvinism in society. This societal issue requires introspection and action from everyone.

The opinion expressed is the author's own and does not reflect Filmibeat's view.

Despite these challenges, it's moving to see how people across borders are demanding justice for the young doctor. This collective outcry shows that there is still hope for improvement and change in society.
