Public Outrage At Tollywood Stars' Delayed Reaction To Kolkata Doctor Rape Case
Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Case: Over ten days have passed since the horrific crime at R.G. Kar hospital in Kolkata, where a 31-year-old PG doctor was gang-raped and murdered. While global celebrities have voiced their outrage, Tollywood stars remained silent initially, sparking public anger.
Although Tollywood celebrities eventually spoke out, their delayed and seemingly insensitive responses led to severe backlash from netizens. This resulted in harsh trolling of these stars on social media platforms.

Prominent Tollywood figures like Rachana Banerjee, Rituparna Sengupta, and Dev Adhikari faced public ire for addressing the case only after it gained international attention. Bollywood stars such as Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Malaika Arora had already shared heartfelt messages by then.
When Bengali celebrities finally posted about the incident, their messages appeared staged and insincere. For instance, National Award-winning actress Rituparna Sengupta mimicked the sound of 'shaakh' without actually using it. Social media users harshly criticized her for faking her act while demanding justice.
Rachana Banerjee, a TMC MP and popular host of Didi No. 1, was trolled for sharing her opinion online while appearing overly made-up with kohl-rimmed eyes and nude lipstick. Netizens accused her of using glycerin to fake tears during such a sensitive issue.
Subhashree Ganguly, a leading Tollywood actress and wife of producer-politician Raj Chakraborty, was also criticized for not speaking up promptly about the R.G. Kar case. Instead, she was busy promoting her movie Babli on social media while the issue was trending.
Bengal's superstar Dev Adhikari, who is also a TMC MP, faced backlash for posting vacation pictures amid rising tensions in Bengal without addressing the case.
Netizens labelled these celebrities as 'spineless', 'inhuman', and 'shameless' among other derogatory terms.
While celebrity reactions may not directly lead to change, they can raise awareness and keep people informed about such cases. This might even pressure authorities to take stringent actions.
