Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Fails To Surpass Srikanth In India's Opening Weekend Box Office

The recent release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has been making waves in the Indian box office, albeit with a challenging competition. The film, a sequel to the 2017 hit War for the Planet of the Apes, faced off against Rajkummar Rao's Srikanth on May 10, 2024. Despite its international acclaim, the Hollywood sci-fi action-adventure couldn't surpass the collections of Rao's biographical drama during its opening weekend in India.

Directed by Wes Ball and produced by Oddball Entertainment alongside Jason T. Reed Production, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes represents the fourth installment in the reboot series and the tenth overall in the franchise. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Freya Allan, Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. Catering to a diverse audience, it was released in four languages across India: English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Apes Sequel Trails Behind Srikanth in India

The opening day saw Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes garnering Rs 3.15 crores at the Indian box office. The movie experienced a slight increase on Saturday with collections amounting to Rs 4.37 crores but witnessed a minor dip on Sunday, bringing in Rs 4.25 crores based on early estimates. This brought its total earnings for the first three days to approximately Rs 11.77 crores.

In contrast, Srikanth, starring Rajkummar Rao, showcased a stronger performance over the weekend. The film's earnings on Sunday were around Rs 5.50 crores (early estimates), culminating in a total of Rs 11.95 crores over three days. Rao's film had kickstarted its journey with an opening day collection of Rs 2.41 crores.

The box office tussle between a Hollywood biggie and a Bollywood biographical drama highlights the diverse preferences of Indian audiences. While Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes brought international cinema's thrill and spectacle to Indian screens, Srikanth appealed to viewers with its compelling narrative rooted in real-life events.

This weekend's box office results underscore the unpredictable nature of film receptions and preferences among Indian moviegoers. As both films continue their theatrical run, it will be interesting to see how they fare and whether Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes can catch up or even surpass its Bollywood competitor in terms of revenue and audience appeal in India.
