Kalki 2898 AD marks Deepika Padukone's first collaboration with Prabhas and director Nag Ashwin. The film has generated significant buzz due to its stellar cast and intriguing storyline. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898, Kalki 2898 AD is the first motion picture instalment of the planned Kalki Cinematic Universe.

Kalki is the tenth and final avatar of Lord Vishnu according to the Bhagavata Purana. In Hindu mythology, Kalki is prophesied to appear at the end of the Kali Yuga to eradicate adharma and initiate the Satya Yuga. The film is reported to chronicle some events of the Mahabharata set in 3102 BC.

In an interaction with Deadline, Nag Ashwin clarified that the movie "does not involve any characters actively worshipped by large numbers of Hindus". He added, "We can take it as extremely religious or we can take it as the story of somebody who was born with a lot of power, didn't know what to do with it, and found his mentor in the process".
