Cannes 2024 Celebrates Indian Female Directors: Sandhya Suri And Payal Kapadia In Spotlight

The 77th Festival de Cannes has officially announced its full lineup of movies for screening and competition, marking a significant moment for Indian cinema. Among the diverse international selections, two films by Indian female directors, Sandhya Suri and Payal Kapadia, have been chosen to compete at this prestigious event. Following her documentary 'A Night of Knowing Nothing', which was screened at Cannes last year, Payal Kapadia returns with 'All We Imagine As Light'. This film marks her first foray into fiction, co-produced by India and France. It narrates the poignant tale of two nurses from Kerala navigating the bustling life of Mumbai. Kapadia's latest work is in contention for the coveted Palme d'Or, showcasing her unique storytelling prowess and the international appeal of her cinematic vision.

Sandhya Suri, a name synonymous with impactful cinema through works like 'The Field' and 'I For India', brings 'Santosh' to Cannes. This BAFTA Award-nominated movie is a character-driven neo-noir set in the hinterlands of Northern India. 'Santosh' competes in the Un Certain Regard category, reserved for films that offer original and distinct perspectives from various cultures around the world.

This year, only two Indian films have secured spots in the Cannes lineup, a testament to their quality and the hard work behind them.
